Be My Heroine Chapter 37

For Count Gordon (1)

“What?”

This information had just reached Beth’s ears.

“The young lady told me not to talk about it, but… I mean it’s uncomfortable.”

Julia whispered to Beth with anxiety plastered on her face.

When Beth left to visit Ryan, the Count intentionally struck Claire’s leg with a cane.

Truly, this despicable couple were unbelievable.

“Why didn’t you say anything?”

Beth asked Julia.

“That’s…”

What Beth heard came as a surprise.

With a vacant look on her face, Beth walked down a hallway.

‘Initially, it was very painful. Yet the following day there wasn’t a trace of her being beaten.’

The fact that there was no evidence of Claire’s abuse was puzzling. Beth wanted to say, If something bizarre happened, tell me immediately!! Ahh, I want to tackle them. Of course, Beth did not voice her inner thoughts.

Even so, it was still strange. In the back of her mind, a part of her felt, ‘This is a little too weird.’

“Beth, what are you doing?”

Kedrick held a fairytale book Claire asked for. He stood next to Beth and asked,

“Beth?”

Lost in thought, Beth continued to walk down the hallway, unaware of his presence.

Smack!

Kedrick flicked his finger on Beth’s forehead. Beth’s body stiffened. She then lifted her head up towards Kedrick.

Kedrick smiled.

“Finally. Is something wrong?”

“Kedrick….”

Beth debated whether to tell him or not. Finally, she opened her mouth.

“While we were away, the young miss’s leg was injured. By the master.”

“…I see.”

His narrowed eyes expressed his disdain.

“However, the next day no marks were left behind…”

A sudden thought popped into her head.

The inn

Recently, there was an inn where the owner and guests were injured.

It was only on the legs.

He carried on as usual since it wasn’t a serious injury. Nevertheless, the wound appeared out of the blue.

Catherine also said she had gotten hurt.

“Could it be?”

“Don’t just keep silent, tell me what you’re thinking.”

Kedrick remained alert as he observed the changes in Beth’s face as she contemplated. Hesitant, Beth said,

“This may sound a bit crazy.”

“I like crazy, so tell me.”

Beth stood still in the middle of the hallway. She turned in the direction of the kitchen, where Catherine worked. Then she looked through the window at the cloudy sky and pointed.

“Is that where Baron Hyde is?”

“Yes?”

 “……”

Beth lowered her finger and said,

“Based on where the young lady was located, the people were southwest of her. It seemed like she was in the same place when she was injured.”

Beth’s heart pounded against her chest when she disclosed her hunch.

“Is this possible?”

Beth shared her strange hypothesis without pausing. Then, she asked Kedrick. His eyes squinted at the direction Beth had pointed at and replied,

“Perhaps it was a protection spell. I’ve heard about it before.”

“… you know this because…?”

“Because I’m interested in curses and defense magic.”

Kedrick answered while he straightened his body to an upright position.

“Then we need to check out what had happened in the southwestern part of the tower where the young miss used to live.”

When she heard this, she instinctively faced the direction of Claire’s room. Though she felt uncomfortable, Beth asked,

“…did someone tell you that she previously lived in the tower?”

At her question he turned and laughed.

“…Just a guess.”

Afterwards, Beth and Kedrick met with the employees who worked at the tower’s southwestern room. When they inquired if they experienced any injuries, some nodded. Consequently, several ghost stories about the southwestern room had sprung up. Some explained it was strange since the number of people injured had decreased recently. They shared only one thing in common; they all worked in the same room that faced Baron Hyde’s.

There’s something out there.

Beth tapped on the table with her fingers as she watched Ryan and Claire. The children shared a book in the middle of the room. Occasionally, Claire taught Ryan the definition of a word.

“Haha.”

Kedrick entered the room with a different book.

“Beth, look at this”

It was certainly a book that shouldn’t be allowed to be near here. Kedrick laughed and replied that the book was difficult to find with such little time.

“Protection magic was the correct answer.”

Amongst the different defensive magic spells, a protection spell was used to protect its target by transferring the spell to someone placed in the middle. For example, let’s say A casts a protection spell on to B. If B is hurt, the wound would be transferred to A magically.

“The most important part is below.”

However, the further away A and B are from each other, the less effective the transfer is. Instead, anyone who was in between A and B would be randomly harmed.

Beth frowned while reading the magic spell’s explanation. The only person who would use such a spell on Claire was someone who cared about her well-being.

Maybe.

Maybe the real Count Gordon was still alive.

This spell must have been casted when Claire was quite young. At that age, only the actual Count treasured Claire.

“It must be the maximum distance. It’s probably beyond Baron Hyde’s place.

“Right.”

How large is this world and how long will it take to reach the end?

She needed to find him, but her mind was in chaos.

She considered whether she should take Claire along. Just then, someone knocked.

“Yes.”

“… Beth.”

It was the butler. He looked at Beth with a somber face.

“The master had summoned you.”

“…..”

She was busy, yet the Count still called her. Her employer was the Count, so she had no choice but to go without a complaint.

“Did you summon me?”

When Beth arrived, the Count carried a look of disapproval while looking at some documents. Beth rolled her eyes back when she sensed something was wrong. Without a glance, the Count frowned at the stack of papers and said,

“Beth, you’re fired.”

“….”

For what reason am I being fired for?

There were plenty of reasons why, but nothing the Count would have noticed. This dense, rash man wouldn’t have just let her go like this if he knew what she was doing.

“Pack up your belongings and leave before the sun goes down today.”

Has this crazy old man gone senile?

Beth thought about what to do with her head lowered.

“Thank you for all this time.”

She was not thankful at all.

Though Beth withdrew for now, it would not be long before the Count would leave indefinitely.

So for now, Beth maintained a calm demeanor.
