Evelyn’s Ring Chapter 5

PLANUS EXARMATIO (4)

“As always, these ignorant are the problem. What a damn omnidirectional nuisance. Do you guys know how much labour you are costing?”

These yellow hair lads, only when they can’t use magic at all will they won’t cause any trouble. There is no witness, should I just ‘hwak’ destroy their mana core….. They had been trapped in this monster passage for a full moon (15 days), who will know how it was destroyed? Directly destroying it can leave traces, what if it’s powdered and vaporized….

Evelyn contemplated very seriously. With a look of disapproval she clicked her tongue and the kids were lifted into the air. I am short on time, so I will let you guys. The kids with weak pulse and had trouble breathing must be treated, but it was more important to leave before the gate closes. If I am trapped here , it will be a big event. If that happens, then my mom… Oh, it’s scary even thinking.

“This is why Mages should also have a qualification test. Just because of high witchery, all those dogs and cats are accepted, things like these happen.”

As annoyed as she left the gate with the kids, the staff of the magic department had surrounded the barrier . As soon as she came out she wanted to spank these punks, but with so many eyes watching nothing could be done. Well, the gate was opened in the midst of the capital, if the magic department didn’t notice, that must be the real big deal.

“Miss Lehil!”

“Just a moment, please don’t touch the barrier.”

Evelyn, who literally threw the kids to the ground, immediately cut off the breath of the Monster. And then she waited till the gate was completely closed just in case another monster turned up. After confirming there was no more danger, she turned to check whether Ian and his friend were safe, when a pale looking mage came near her. Feeling the warmth from his mana, was he a healer? 5th circle or just breakthrough to 6th.

“Miss Lehil, are you alright? Is there anywhere you are uncomfortable?”

“Ah, yes. Just so and so. Please look at the kids first. Though they are still alive, their body temperature is too low and breathing is unstable. Seems like it was caused by the long exposure to the monster’s toxicity. I think we should detox them.”

“Yes, I understood. You really did great. Still your complexion looks bad. At lest a simple recovery spell…..”

“Evelyn!”

Why is that punk coming here? I obviously know that there are 2 classes in the morning. Slightly impressed by the familiar voice coming from afar, showing a shallow smile at the worried staff of the magic department, she slightly shook her head. Even with a slight movement she felt dizzy and vision turned blurry.

“I am fine. My henchman is here.”

“…Pardon?”

She doesn’t have the energy to explain. All the children were saved, the monster was killed, the gate was also completely closed and nobody seems hurt…. Good, now even Henry is here. I can finally faint with ease. The Class… Damn it, will I get an absence for public reason. Her 8 years of absent free life ends like this. I went to class even with broken ribs.

“Oh my God, Miss Lehil!”

When they saw Evelyn faint down, someone screamed as if torn apart . The area turned chaotic in a moment. If something happened to a college freshman on site even before officially recruited, quite a few will have to take off their official robes. Furthermore, she wasn’t just somebody, but rather a royalty that was 3rd in line for the throne.

When the associated personals turned gray, a young man seemed to travel 100 steps in a breath without any air of surprise and hugged Evelyn. That form which seemed scrutinized from head to toe looked pretty familiar.

“Evelyn, are you okay? Can you tell who I am?”

“It’s noisy.”

“Ringing in head? It’s  because of lack of sleep. Anyway seeing her temper, she must be alright. Is there anywhere broken?”

“Wrist.”

Checking her wrist carefully, muttering something quietly, Henry let out a deep sigh as if he wanted others to hear it.

“It’s slightly broken. It’s treated and soon it will be alright. Since the face is clean, there seems to be no bleeding. There seems to be no serious injury… .But why does the complexion look so bad? Do you feel pain anywhere else?”

“My Class.”

“Ah, <Ancient magic Incantations>. Nothing can be done. You can’t attend the class in this condition.”

“I know.”

Smirking at Evelyn’s highly-strung reply, he stared at the magic department staff with cranked neck. Clearly reading sarcasm from his eyes, the staff dropped their heads in shame.

“I am Henry Price. I will take Evelyn from here.”

“That, We… Miss Lehil seemed to be injured… at least a simple treatment….”

“If you knew how to do that, you should have done it earlier. Anyway, it’s enough. I have already done both treatment and restoration, but no one seems to notice it. The Ministry of magic knows for elites, how come…”

“.….Henry.”

“I got it. Though your mother won’t sit still seeing you like this.”

“Mo, Mother…”

Deeply frustrated, Evelyn shut her mouth and closed her eyes. Seeing this, Henry who was glaring at the mages, turned around seeming cold. When met with Ian, Henry slightly paused, nodded his head in greeting, and disappeared like wind. Kyren, who had been keenly watching these series of events, faintly narrowed his eyes.

“Hmm, was that some kind of magic? It’s impossible to conjure such a speed with human steps. Earlier too, he appeared in a moment… The distance was at least 50m? I thought that all those mages were scammers, but the arc mage really is different. The sole heir of the Lehil family was quite surprising.

“Henry Price. That friend must be the son of Duke William Price?”

“Mm. He and Miss Lehil are childhood friends.”

“Childhood friends…. They both are wearing rings with similar design.”

The head was big and the design was lousy, tacky… A person with a normal aesthetic won’t dare to put such a ring on his fingers unless it holds some meaning. If it was me, not even in death.

“Ring? There was no news of their engagement… Ahh, I heard that mages will use accessories to replenish their mana.”

“Wasn’t that a superstition? If not, it must be a trick of jewelers.”

“How can I know that. I am just a 1 circle.”

Kyren, who had been carefully watching the messy site, gradually cleared up, without any lingering turned around. He waited wondering if the class could go on, but Professor Nathan, who was having a serious conversation with the staff of the magic department, seemed not in the spirit to be concerned about the class at the moment.

“Class over? Professor Nathan is not leaving, it seems like the last class will be canceled. Then go to the library or something.”

“Got Financial Accounting class. How about catching up for dinner afterwards?”

“I have a seminar. Gathering of advanced military students who passed the bureaucrat exam.”

Since the birth status is not enough, the rest must be made by oneself. The department allocation openly shows the reality of how personal connections work. No matter how much of a successful senior candidate you are, there is no guarantee to be allocated to the top ministry/department. If you take your first step in a place like Palace internal Ministry which undertakes all kinds of chores or Ministry of welfare which doesn’t give any patronage, it can be a huge setback for the future plans. One or two friends with a strong backing is important.

“Already? School just started. How many bodies do you have [T/N: Are you not tired?]?”

“I wish I had at least 3 more. But sadly there is only one. Ok then, bye.”

Can magic be used for self-defence? If so, I wish to learn a bit. Kyren giggled recalling Evelyn who looked like a drooping doll, still worrying over the class.  Just a fleeting thought though, because there was a heap of books he needed to finish with this week.

Bang! The sound made by Cecilia’s fist against the table startled everyone. In particular Chief Bulove, the culprit who put Evelyn to the scene, he was so shocked that almost sprung up from his seat by a span. Count Lehil was the one only person who drank his tea calmly without even a frown.

“I can’t stand it any more. I allowed my daughter to be a mage only because she promised to stay in the laboratory safely, but still being a student, she was hurt this much?”

“I am really sorry. Madam. The situation was so urgent…”

“Is my Evelyn the only mage in Berine? Then why is there a Ministry of Magic?”

“My apologies.”

Both the Minister of Magic department and director of Magic Research bowed till their head almost reached the table. Recalling Evelyn in the arms of Henry with a bloodless face, Cecilia couldn’t calm down.

“If you are sincere with your apologies, promise not to take my child to such scenes anymore.”

“Madam I am really sorry. But, I can’t guarantee that. Evelyn is an 8th circle mage, all the more a reserve public servant who already passed the bureaucrat exam, someday ….”

“You mean situations like this could continue to happen in the future. Since you are an 8th circle mage, shut up and sacrifice yourself? A little girl, all alone, broken this way and that way?”

“It’s not like that…. This time it was really a force majeure. Who would have thought that a monster would open the gate inside the college…”

“It’s enough. I will send Evelyn to Pitte once she graduates. If I leave it like this, what awaits my precious daughter will be an untimely death. At least she won’t have to battle with a monster there.”

“Please calm down Madam.  We will try our best to ensure incidents like this won’t happen in the future…”

“Make your words clear. I don’t believe it anymore.”

Henry smirked from a corner of the reception seeing those officials embarrassed and went up to the second floor. The Countess made such a scene, it will be silent for a while. But the exhilaration didn’t last long. Henry frowned, seeing Evelyn beside the bookshelf, how should be resting at the moment.

Right now even a 10 hours sleep was not enough…. Though she was treated immediately, adequate rest is needed to replenish the drained mana. However he was well aware that she won’t tolerate excessive concern, he has to be careful while showing his concern.

“What are you doing, not resting?”

“Have something to look into. It was my first time entering this deeply into the passage, if done properly I think the passage can be blocked altogether. Trap the monster within, unable to exist through the opposite gate. Long back I have seen someone writing a thesis on this topic, but thought it impossible at that time.”

“But still, it’s better to rest now. Your mother is almost spitting fire now.”

“Hey, don’t say such things carelessly. My mom is someone who will throw fireballs once she is really angry.”
