Evelyn’s Ring Chapter 7

PLANUS EXARMATIO (6)

“Evelyn, class is gonna start.”

Kyren, who had a worried look, glanced at Henry who rudely cut what he was going to say. … Is he wary of me?

Kyren was good at controlling his emotions. He looked at Evelyn once again and smiled as if it was nothing.

“Professor Nathan’s <Ancient Magic Incantations>? I am also in that class. You seemed worried about missing out on classes, fortunately, classes were canceled last week.”

“Oh, Is that so?”

Evelyn suddenly glanced at Kyren with a puzzled look. The outright gaze flustered Kyren but he opted to just smile. What just happened? I suddenly felt touched.

“You attend <Ancient Magic incantations>?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Because you can’t use magic. It’s her first time meeting someone without mana like this.  Seeing Evelyn’s gaze filled with questions, Kyren laughed with clear limpid eyes. But inside, he was not at all limpid and didn’t plan to expose his darkness to a person who he is barely acquainted with.

“Just scholarly curiosity. After graduating I might not have any opportunity to be exposed to magic. So..”

“Oh.. yes. But the course is aimed at advanced mages. Without any foundation, it can be difficult to understand.”

“Haha, I am well aware. I will try my best but can I bother you If I get stuck?”

“Evelyn, Professor is coming.”

Henry, who cut Kyren for the second time, wrapped his arm by her shoulders and went into the classroom. Meeting a low IQ opponent after a long time, Kyren couldn’t smile this time.  This cocky punk, can’t he see others?

“What’s with you? Being so rude?”

“What’s with me.? Don’t you hate being late for class.”

Evelyn hurriedly turned her head in embarrassment, by which the brewing displeasure in Kyren’s eyes disappeared without a trace. She bowed in apology to which Kyren smiled gently at while snorting inside. Just a kid who can’t even hold the heart of a girl he likes and wants to vent it on to me, huh? You can only cling around all your life and get kicked out.

“I will be really angry if you do this again. Manners are the basics of human relationships. If you wanna act like this, don’t stick to me!”

“Yes, yes. You and your nagging.”

Kyren watched with delight as Henry got knocked by Evelyn. Fixing his expression, he followed behind. It was not his business to care for the relationship of some immature lads, and by Evelyn’s words, the class will be difficult for him, so he needed to get his head straight.

“How was the class?”

“Interesting.”

“Really?”

Ian’s eyes widened by Kyren’s simple impression. Kyren was someone who always showed rejection towards Magic. According to him, a bit more technological advancement can take over the fields currently under Magic and because of the uncertainty in output depending upon the person concerned, it can never bear science.

Actually, he still adhered to that thought but the magic class he took for the first time in his life made him look differently at the might of an advanced mage.

-Now, everyone uses their own language to operate magic. But in ancient times, there were definite incantations for certain magic. Such magic spells will be more powerful than simply using mana. Of course, by current standards, you must be at least a 7th circle mage to use such incantations. Miss Lehil, can you come forward for a moment?

Professor Nathan asked her to make light. Seeing her making a light ball as big as a human head in no time, everyone in the class was amazed. Kyren too, though he didn’t express it.

Kyren had only seen mages igniting sparks enough to light a stove so far. It was possible for anyone with a little mana but lower circles mages can’t properly use light and fire separately (when there is fire there is light). Occasionally hearing fire accidents caused by under-trained mages, Kyren thought they were extremely pathetic.

But what Evelyn made was light in itself, where no heat was felt. In the eyes of Kyren who didn’t trust in magic, such a perfect sphere of light floating in the air felt phenomenal.

-Now let’s try the incantation on page 12. Gather the mana with more focus then memorize the spell with exact pronunciation. Note that don’t get distracted by other thoughts or noises.

Radiathione Luminareto. (Incantation)

As the incantation fell from her mouth a much radiant light sphere was made. To the extent that it was even blinding to look at. Applause burst from here and there. Particularly, Prof. Nathan, who couldn’t hide his voice that was trembling with excitement.

-That was amazing! It’s said that, when a 12th circle mage uses this spell, he can create light as bright as the sun. That’s why ancient spells can’t be used rashly. For example, the light made by Miss Lehil does not harm others, but fire is different. Miss Lehil, how big of a fire can you make by your usual magic?

Evelyn contemplated for a moment then replied calmly. Of course, the answer was not just usual.

-If going all out, I think I can burn down 5 or 6 classrooms like this.

-Then with ancient incantation, the college can be burned to ashes right?

The lesson that followed was why ancient incantations should not be used carelessly and doubtfully.

-The ultimate purpose of this class is to defend yourself if you ever meet a mage who wants to harm people with such incantations. Fortunately, there are counterspells for almost all aggressive spells. Finally, let Miss Lehil and Master Price demonstrate the widely known ignite and extinguish spells.

Inflamatio.

Extingtio.

Over the first fire made by Henry Price, almost immediately a waterfall was poured on. Kyren, who always did things boldly, felt goosebumps, seeing the fire get distinguished even without smoke.

“If she wants, Evelyn Lehil can remain in history as a great evil/villain because of her power, you know?”

“No way, she is not such a person.’

“People are unpredictable. After hearing the class, my conviction to dispose of magic from this world became firmer. It is more dangerous than I thought.”

An ability to turn everything around that you can see into ashes with just a word… Indeed I can’t correspond to mages at all.

“The spell that we are going to learn today, most will be hearing of it for the first time in their life. It needs an 11th circle or higher mage to cast. It’s a spell to control a person’s consciousness that leads to death by exhausting their vitality. Of course, a just mage won’t use such a spell. An 11th circle mage hasn’t appeared for centuries, and the probability they won’t appear in the future is high…”

Listening to Prof. Nathan, Evelyn slowly murmurs the incantation written on the book. Spiritus necxum. A shackle to the soul… Even though she already scattered the mana, the pressure itself from the spell was considerable. Sigh, if an 11th circle mage really cast this spell focusing his energy completely, it must be huge?

“Exceptionally for this, there are 2 counterspells. One is a spell that can neutralize all kinds of spells, including restriction. It’s useful in wars or other attacks, especially for students aiming for public bureaus. It will be better to learn this spell. However, the larger the effect, the larger the mana consumed, so you can at most use it only two times at once. So you must be careful to use it at the critical moment.”

Planus Exarmatio. Complete disarming. Repeatedly memorizing the spell, feeling a gaze on her, she raised her head. But even after looking around, no one caught her eyes.

Just her feeling.

“That guy keeps looking at you.”

Henry also felt it, then it was not her imagination?  But Kyren, who Henry pointed at using his chin, was focused on his textbook. Though she felt a bit leery, she didn’t agree with Henry as she was against ensnaring others based on unclear facts.

“Almost everyone looks at me because I  was asked to demonstrate.”

“That guy is different. And whenever he smiles, my eyes hurt seeing it.”

“His personality is also strange. Why smile when he feels offended?”

“Though I can’t explain. I just don’t like it.”

“Aren’t you being too conscious of that senior? Because he is more handsome than you?”

Her lips curved up seeing Henry frowning. Still so cute, just like when they were in preschool.

“Stop talking nonsense and listen to the class. I clearly said that I won’t mind even if you fail.”

“The second one is a spell created by the greatest Mage in history, Rodrick Dover. Acesio Interidictum. A more powerful spell than the one we learned earlier. The effect is almost permanent and can even play a role of containment. As the circle limit is relatively small, it’s said that one can try from the 8th circle. ”

Permanent as well as containment effect? Then why wasn’t it used so far? It was quickly answered.

“But there is a fatal weakness to this spell. That is, once the spell is properly triggered, the mana core of the casted will be destroyed. When one’s life is at stake by an attacking spell, it can save said life, however, the life as a mage of the casted will come to an end there. So do not use it rashly.”

Hmm… Though the destruction of mana core matters, nothing is more important than life. In emergencies, it can be used on someone devoid of mana without any worries.  Glancing at Kyren, the man with the least mana she has ever met, Evelyn’s eyes widened in surprise. Unlike his usual gentle smile, his eyes were dark.

Wow, I have never seen a face like that. He looks like a completely different person without a smile. A sharp temperament… So overbearing. Ahh, so that’s why he always smiles. It’s commendable to try to change one’s impression but won’t it be tiring living through other’s eyes?

He was thinking intently with a serious face and as if feeling Evelyn’s gaze, he arched his lips up naturally. Seeing Kyren smiling sweetly once their eyes met, she unwittingly clicked her tongue loudly. Awesome. I can never live like that.

“What happened?”

“.… Nothing.”

Anyway, he is a fundamentally different person from me. That face was quite to my taste… It’s a shame, it must be difficult to get close to such a person.
