Driving the Hospital Crazy

At Jinshui Psychiatric Hospital, the sky is already brightening, bringing soft light to the gray and white hospital building. Footsteps sounded from the corridors as the nurses began to prepare breakfast in each room.

In the dean’s office, Chu Yu and Dean Hu are sitting opposite each other. The office is in the administration building, which is quite secluded. At this moment, they are silent, accompanied with only magpies crying outside the window.

Today, Chu Yu wore a pure white dress with white patterns. Even the crevices of her shoes were white and spotless. When a nurse saw her, she smiled and thought that she had come to the psychiatric hospital for the occasion, determined to become one with the angels in white.

Chu Yu crossed her legs, propped a hand on the armrest, and sat gracefully. She occasionally took a sip of the lemon grapefruit water that she carried with her and looked content, like she was on a day trip, not a psychiatric hospital.

“In other words, as long as she is there, there will be abnormal events happening, right?”

On the opposite side of the office desk, Hu Bin sat stiffly and upright, with a ZhongHai hairstyle. In order to welcome Chu Yu, Hu Bin applied hair gel to slick his hair back neatly, instead of the usual skyward pointing hair.

Although he has the hairstyle, his face looks very bleak, the lines in his forehead are deep, and his entire body lacks energy. Only Hu Bin’s eyes projected a wise and haunting faint light.

“Yes, you can say it that way. The 4 person ward she was assigned in the beginning was changed to 2. Now she has her own ward, but still manages to drive the whole hospital into chaos.”

“Chaos,” Chu Yu twisted the cap onto her drink and set it aside. “Did she gather a crowd to fight, or give a passionate speech of rebellion?”

“This…” The lines on Hu Bin’s forehead gathered together, almost like the character “愁” for worry, “She didn’t do anything, she was.….. very quiet.”

Chu Yu’s expression changed slightly, “Continue”

“Every week after dinner there is recreational time, and non-violent patients would be led by the nurses to the lounge for activities. Some patients like to play chess, some like to play mahjong, and some like to play table tennis. Everyone does their own thing peacefully.”

“What does she like to do?”

“She liked to sit in a soft leather chair by the window and quietly watch everyone play with great interest. She did so for a few days until last week, when she stood up and quietly walked over to the others. She looked like she was whispering into their ears, but she also looked like she wasn’t speaking at all.”

With that, Hu Bin lifted his hand and smoothed his hair, fearing that they would stand up again because of his emotions.

“Regardless of whether she speaks or not, the result is terrible. Take last Friday as an example, with two patients who play together very harmoniously. While they played happily, she went to stand beside them. Not long after, the two of them began to flip the table. If the medical staff didn’t come in time, one of them could smash the brains out of the other.”

As Chu Yu listened, her eyes shone brightly and she looked very interested. However, she still maintained a sensible attitude, “You can’t be sure that she is the culprit. Psychiatric patients inherently have unstable emotions and psychological states. Maybe she just happened to be there when they started acting up.”

“If it’s just this one case, we wouldn’t think it’s her problem,” Hu Bin added, hoping to convince Chu Yu. “I said before that she changed wards 3 times. This is because we found out that patients in the same ward as her experience manic episodes at night. One of the patients who is usually quiet like ice madly tried to smash the window open at night, wanting to jump down. When the nurse on duty heard the ruckus, she desperately struggled to control the situation.”

Chu Yu frowned slightly, “What was she doing when that patient wanted to jump off the building?”

“She lay quietly on her side, with her back to the window, apparently sleeping.”

Chu Yu lowered her eyes, and thought: Since the sound of smashing the window would alarm the nurse, it is impossible for a person in the same room to not hear it!

After pondering for a moment, she looked up and asked, “Have all the relevant inspection procedures been completed?”

“She passed it on the first day of admission. In the psychological evaluation, it was preliminarily identified as adult autism, with no propensity to violence. In the EEG, magnetic resonance spectroscopy, single photon emission tomography, etc, the immune system, neuroendocrine and neurotransmitters did not detect significant abnormalities, that is, only temporary psychopathological features.”

Chu Yu tilted her head slightly, “But you think it is not as simple as autism?”

“Yes, people with adult autism generally do not cause harm to their surroundings. It is a bit like neurosis in clinical psychology, which hardly conflicts with the outside world. But I think her presence puts many patients in danger.”

“So what I have to do is find out why she is different, right?”

After speaking so much and finally touching the subject, the dark clouds over Hu Bin’s face began to dissipate, “Chu Yu, we can handle ordinary mental illnesses, but if it’s a very complicated and difficult case, you need to step in. I had wanted to call you a long time ago, but knowing that you are very busy, I held back until now. I can’t take it anymore, if that little girl stays any longer, she will drive the whole hospital crazy!”

Chu Yu: “……”

Talking as if the whole hospital can’t take care of one illness.

“She already lives alone now, won’t she stop?”

“Ai,” Hu Bin furrowed his eyebrows, with each line on his forehead higher than the other. “Although she doesn’t have roommates, she has neighbors next door. At night, they would be weeping like ghosts and howling for suicide, scaring all the nurses on duty. They stay next door to her every night at the same time. In their own words, they technically formed an anti-suicide squad.”

“If doctors and nurses approach her, will things happen?”

Hu Bin thought for a bit and shook his head, “If even the medical staff goes mad, then she definitely must go!”

Hearing this, Chu Yu’s expression became more and more serious, from the initial carelessness to the current interest.

After three years of work in the Supernormal Research and Investigation Department, she has seen all the new strange things, and is surrounded by odd occurrences every day. With her experience, she had developed a steel-like mind. Now, even in the face of a talking ape, she can calmly drink tea and exchange experiences about learning mandarin with it.

But the girl who appeared this time successfully attracted her attention, and made her numb curiosity bounce twice, like a hibernating frog who got poked in the buttocks and jumped with a “peng—”.

“Okay, wait a moment,” Chu Yu stood up and sorted out the wrinkles on the hem of her linen cotton skirt, “I will go meet her.”

The head nurse in charge of area A led the way for her. Area A contained level 0-2 patients with higher self-control and distinction capabilities, so there would be more wards.

Nurse Yang led Chu Yu to room 710 on the corner of the seventh floor. It is a single ward with light blue walls and doors like the clear sky, relaxed and peaceful. At this time, other patients had already gone to have breakfast, but the patient in 710 did not go out. She enjoyed the “VIP service”, where a nurse personally brought breakfast to her room, where she can eat alone. The room is now silent, like everything was in a deep sleep.

The door had an electronic lock which required a password or fingerprint. Chu Yu nodded, and Nurse Yang stepped forward to press her thumb on the interface.

As the door clicked open, Nurse Yang became anxious, turning her feet towards the open corridor, “Doctor Chu, you can ring the bell after you’re done to call me over, I’ll go back to my reception desk first.”

Chu Yu watched her flee, as if her rear end was on fire. She couldn’t help but lift the corners of her mouth before raising her hand and knocking on the door.

“Knock, knock, knock—” The crisp sound of knocking echoed down the corridor before disappearing completely, leaving only silence.

When no one responded, Chu Yu knocked three more times, still with no response.

“Hello, I am your attending physician, surnamed Chu. Is it convenient for me to come in now?”

There was no movement. She faced a steel door, closed like a rejection to her.

Yes, just ignore her.

Chu Yu gently pushed the door and stepped in.
