“So, I should get going now.”
The viscountess and countess laughed and conversed for a long time. They only got up around lunch time. The countess looked at her with a regretful expression.
“It is going to be lunch time soon. Have lunch before you go.”
When the countess said so, the viscountess looked back at the maids and showed an amicable smile.
“Whatever be the reason, I have to look at my student whom I was to start teaching from today. She is also Countess’s daughter.”
“My only concern is that you are very kind-hearted.”
Kind-hearted, just some dog shit. It must be black and twisted.
Beth, who heard their conversation sparsely, almost bit her tongue. She was sure that it must have been deliberately spoken loudly.
The viscountess saluted the countess and went towards where Beth stood. She went straight towards her as if she was already aware that Beth was the personal in-charge of Claire. She stopped her steps and looked at Kedrick with enchanted eyes.
Beth rolled her eyes thinking about what was this situation now.
What’s this about?
Did she fall for him? But for that…. thinking about Viscountess’ age, didn’t she have any conscience?
With a graceful smile, Viscountess said to Kedrick, “Who might you be?”
“I am called Kedrick. I am the guard of Claire Gordon.”
“Ah, Miss Claire? I am Diane Effie who is going to be Claire’s teacher.”
Beth felt like an invisible person. She just stood straight and alternately watched the two people in front of her.
“I am honored to meet you, Viscountess.”
“Then can I request you to lead the way.?”
However she looked, all she could feel was Kedrick being watched with eyes filled with ulterior motives. Kedrick answered completely ignoring the look in her eyes, “This maid beside me knows much more than me.”
“Well?”
As if she only saw Beth at that moment, the Viscountess looked at Beth. Viscountess Effie was very much aware about Beth from the beginning but she pretended not to know.
“Are you the maid in charge of Miss Claire?”
Beth bowed her head slightly and answered, “Yes, Madame. I am called Beth.”
If her voice could be felt, Viscountess Effie answered with a voice which would have been softer than silk, “Oh, then can you lead my way?”
“Yes, madame.”
“You guys are also working hard.”
The servants who waited up on the tea-time, cleaned up the garden, and carried away things, once they heard the gentle and kind words of Viscountess Effie, they felt joyous.
Of course Beth was not included in them. Rather, Beth’s mind spurred with how much she found the Viscountess detestable.
Hell to her benevolence. She was immersed in enjoying herself for one and a half hours. In this whole mansion, there was only one person who didn’t know how much others slighted and viewed the young lady in contempt.
Poor Claire, she was too kind and good tempered that others thought her as a pushover…. No, the ones at fault were the adults who lashed out on such a kind and innocent child. There was nothing to fault with Claire.
Beth swallowed the swears that threatened to come out and led the way. Beth would reveal her emotional side, unlike her usual self, if the person had any sort of connection with Claire.
Not a word was spoken. Beth felt Mrs. Effie sent covert glances towards Kedrick, but it was not her matter of concern. Kedrick too didn’t care about her either.
Finally Beth reached the door, where Claire was inside. Beth gently knocked on the door, “Young ladyi, your teacher, Viscountess Effie has arrived.”
“Mm, well! Ask her to come in….!”
The startled voice of a child was heard from behind the door. As soon as the door was opened, the child sprung to her feet and stood there hesitantly without even lifting up her head. Claire tightly held onto her already wrinkled dress which made the dress all the more crumbled. Beth could only watch such a Claire with pitiful eyes.
“So you are Claire Gordon. I am pleased to meet you. I am Sarah Diane Effie.”
“Pl, pleasure to meet you, Mrs Effie!”
When Viscountess heard herself being called Mrs Effie, her eyebrows wriggled. She said to Kedrick and Beth in her usual sugary tone.
“I am thinking about starting the class now – the servants can go out and do their job.”
“.……..”
The words of a noble couldn’t be refuted. So the two people left the room silently before the class started. They even didn’t make a sound when they closed the door. When they came out, they just stood there with a vacant expression.
Kedrick asked as he stretched straight, “So, that are you going to do now?”
“.……”
“.….? Beth, where did you get it?”
Kedrick asked about the glass cup held in Beth’s hands, who seemed oblivious to Kedrick’s questions.
“Just took one with me.”Saying so she went into an adjacent room. Kedrick also followed suit.
“What are you doing?”
“.…shh.”
Beth put the glass cup onto the wall and stuck her ears to the end of the glass. Kedrick didn’t understand what her action meant. He went beside her with his hands in his pockets, stood against the wall and watched Beth.
The woman who was shorter than himself to begin with was now crouched on the floor which made her all the more shorter in front of him.
“Can you please keep quiet? I can’t hear anything.”
Kedric, who couldn’t make the tail out of her actions, crouched beside her and met her eyes.
No, it would be misleading to say that he met her eyes. Because he was looking at the wall beside her with a penetrating gaze.
Can she hear that?
When Kedrick sensed the meaning behind Beth’s actions, he faintly smiled. He felt it absurd to be able to hear what was happening in the adjacent room just by staring at the wall.
If he said that to her, then there won’t be a good reply from her.
So Kedrick in lieu of answering, gently knocked on her forehead.
“.…. what?”
“Shh.”
Kedric turned towards Beth who looked at him with a bewildered expression and put a finger on his lips and winked at her.
“Be quiet. So that you can hear.”
“?”
Even without sticking her ears to the glass cup, the sound started to be heard.
Though very small.
“Kedrick, do you know magic?”
“I am better with a sword than magic.”
The sound was very small as if murmuring, but it was better than to stick her ear to the glass cup. Because the walls of the mansion were unnecessarily thick. As if wanting to be praised, Kedrick looked at Beth with an elated expression with folded arms.
“Thank you.”
“Only words?”
“Then do you want money?”
“You said you don’t have money.”
“.….”
Beth looked at Kedrick in displeasure. Kedrick laughed out loud and said, “Later give me a little of your time. Isn’t your time more worthy than your money?”
Beth thought of the reason behind this and shot a glance at Kedrick. Time? He is not asking for my time to make me sign some absurd contract, right?
It was unknown whether Kedrick understood what was going on Beth’s mind. With a shrug, he pointed a finger at the wall.
“We should hear now.”
Beth looked at Kedrick vacantly for a while and carefully put down the glass cup on the floor. She put both her hands on the wall and stuck her ears towards the wall. The Viscountess and Claire could be heard faintly.
[Miss Claire really is very beautiful.]
[I, I am sorry.]
[Not a bit of dignity in the voice….. If someone saw you they would think that you are a lonely orphan picked up from the streets!]
[.…….]
[You should have at least been taught the basics! Really! If it was not for the request from the countess, I would not have come.]
Beth, who was on the other side of the wall, tightly clenched her fist which was slightly trembling.
[Can’t you please…- I…..-]
This particular exchange was clearly heard to her. For other exchanges, she could only make out some words or some murmurings. It seemed that Kedrick’s magic was perfect. But this much was enough. In truth, she could guess even without hearing that Viscountess Effie didn’t have any thought to properly teach Claire.
Beth thought that she would at least teach her something for the sake of it. But Beth was weighed down by the reality. She felt it fortunate that she was someone who didn’t show on her face what was going on in her mind.
Large and warm hand covered Beth’s fists and she was brought back from her reverie.
“What is it?”
“Your hands will be hurt, if you go on with it.”
Kedrick’s hand carefully spread out Beth’s tightly clenched fists. He only let go of her hands after he confirmed that there were no wounds on her palm.
“Beth. Whatever it is, you need a healthy body to make it happen.” Kedrick said with a bright smile.
“I also felt it last time. Your hands are cold.”
“It’s just that your body is too warm.”
“It is not. I have a cold body. Try to keep your body as warm as possible. And what about consulting a doctor?”
“Now, in this type of situation, you say such things?”
When Beth asked it with an argumentative tone, Kedrick asked with his usual smile, “Now, in this type of situation, what is wrong about it?”
Did he use his magic only on her, without using it on himself? Beth, as if she was unaware of Kendrick’s intention, she looked at him with a frown.
“Beth, beg me to help.”
If she did so, then she would have to agree to all his conditions.
As if he wanted to say something like that, he contained Beth in his opal eyes which was very similar to Claire’s. She just stared at him who had his mouth shut. She slowly stood up.
“I will do what I can.”
“Is that so?”
How much was left till lunch?. She paced in that small room. Beth sat on the chair at the corner of the room and stretched out her legs with both hands placed on top of them.
Kedrick went to the back side of the sofa and watched Beth who was lost in thoughts.
Viscountess Effie must be lashing out at Claire at the moment under the cover of teaching.
It’s not good to have that sort of education.
She could not understand the Countess’s intention. Even if Claire was not their own child, how can they try to bury her in the society, when it could adversely affect their own reputation?
Does she hate Claire that much? Was it because she was a character in the novel? Beth pressed hard on her forehead with these thoughts.
How much hatred did she have against that small child? Rather, if she were to coax the child to her side, then it would be like cake falling from the sky….
Because her character setting was like that?
It made sense. In the first place, the countess’ character was designed as such. Or might be because the author thought that since her character would soon fall out from the story line, so there is no need for a solid 3-D structure.
Substantially, her time of death was two years after the fire accident. Beth thought of waiting till then, but now seeing the current situation, she felt she could not wait that long.
At the moment, I need to drag the Countess and Viscountess far away from each other.
If things really went that way, then she needed to make it seem like the fault lay completely with the Countess. Because after tearing two apart, it will be more easy to deal with the Countess. Beth nodded her head as she organized what she needs to do in the future quickly within her mind.
As she was going to get up from her position, Kedrick pressed down onto her shoulder with some strength.
“Why?”
Without answering, he held out a letter towards her with a beautiful smile.
“This….?”
“The letter Dana Brian wanted to pass on to you. I was thinking when to pass on the letter since Beth was so deeply immersed in thinking.”
Beth sensed that the letter could be from James. She snatched the letter as fast as she could. Kedrick, who witnessed this, grinned at her, “Others might think of it as a love letter.”
“When did the letter arrive?”
“Ahah, earlier when I came down to find you.”
There was not a word from then to now. Beth looked at Kedrick with displeasure but the handsome guy just smiled as usual.
He is not at all likable as always.
The letter didn’t even have a tear mark. She looked at the letter thoroughly and carefully. She turned her body from Kedrick’s field of vision and only after that did she unseal the letter.
There were only five words in the letter, but the content was enough. Beth showed a satisfied smile.
I believe in your words.
