I Am the Only Human Here - Chapter 14
Just as Xiao Chongming left, Wei Huan straightforwardly raised his chin towards Yang Sheng and said, "Have a seat." He grabbed a banana from the bedside table, peeled it, and took a big bite, mumbling, "Are you wondering where I came from and why I had to take the exam at Shanhai?"
Yang Sheng's expression changed. Originally, he had wanted to initiate a meeting with this human, but it turned out Wei Huan had seen through his intentions.
Even if Wei Huan didn't say anything, just a glance was enough for him to understand what was on his mind. They had developed a certain level of familiarity since the moment Wei Huan had arrived in split-crotch pants.
"Since you're being so straightforward, I won't beat around the bush," Yang Sheng sat down. "I haven't seen your previous matches, but I've heard some rumors. Your battle with Xiao Ling… To be honest, I don't believe your strengths are as disparate as people imagine."
Wei Huan kept his gaze fixed on Yang Sheng's eyes and remained silent. Although Yang Sheng was smiling, Wei Huan could sense the probing in his gaze.
During the competition, Wei Huan deliberately concealed his attacking patterns. In theory, Yang shengshouldn't have been able to figure it out so quickly, especially with the bizarre situation of a soul transferring from a demon to a human body. Yang sheng shouldn't have suspected this so soon.
Seeing Wei Huan's silence, Yang sheng continued, "Your close combat skills are good. Even though you were mostly on the defensive in the first half of the match, I can tell you have the ability to go on the offensive. You just choose not to."
The pupils of the members of the Bifang family had a faint purple light, which was not usually noticeable but was quite apparent when Yang sheng stared at him.
"I don't choose not to; I genuinely can't," Wei Huan calmly replied, without showing any signs of vulnerability. "My opponent was the youngest daughter of the Bifang family, and her close combat skills are top-notch. With my abilities, I could barely resist her. Managing to hold out in the first half was just a stroke of luck."
"If my close combat skills were as good as you suggest, I would have speedily ended the match to win. Not only would I have won, but she also wouldn't have had a chance to use her demon power. It would have been a win-win situation," Wei Huan shrugged. "I don't know if you've seen my previous matches, but I did that in the earlier rounds—preventing the demon from using their demon powers."
This statement made sense, and Yang sheng couldn't find any refutation.
Seeing that Yang sheng had stopped talking, Wei Huan breathed a sigh of relief. He had hidden his attacking patterns during the match, and he was afraid that Yang sheng might suspect something, even though it seemed unlikely.
But then, he heard Yang sheng ask, "Where did you train in close combat? Can you tell me your teacher's name?"
He just couldn't let it go.
Wei Huan found himself needing to counter this curiosity. "It's actually not very convenient," Wei Huan replied, with a slight emotional fluctuation. "My teacher prefers to remain low-key and doesn't want me to divulge any personal information. Otherwise, I'd get another lecture when I return."
In his previous life, Wei Huan had only studied close combat with two people: his father and Yang sheng's father, Yang Zheng, who was also the former combat instructor at the Fuyao Academy. Wei Huan could even say that his parents had the most profound influence on him before entering Shanhai. After coming to Shanhai, he had become Yang Zheng's favorite student, even to the point where Yang Zheng's strict demands on Wei Huan exceeded those placed on his own son. This had sparked some discussions, but the two remained as close as brothers.
Wei Huan respected only two people the most in his life: his parents and Yang Zheng, who was known as "Yang sheng's teacher."
Once again, Yang sheng fell into silence, which Wei Huan was well aware of. Yang shneg was the type of person who always took things seriously. If there was something he didn't understand, he couldn't let it go until he figured it out. This was one of the reasons Wei Huan hadn't wanted Yang sheng to know about his reincarnation so early.
The situation was currently complex and mysterious, and Wei Huan didn't even know who had killed him, how he had been reborn, and why he was being pursued by a research institution that used living humans for experiments. Given these complications, he preferred not to involve Yang sheng.
"In the beginning, I did have my suspicions that you might be a demon, perhaps a half-demon. The demon aura was weak, but during treatment, the school physician confirmed you as human," Yang sheng said, squinting his eyes as if in thought.
"Before saying these words, you must have already investigated me," Wei Huan knew Yang sheng inside out. He was a meticulous person, and if he had suspicions, he would gather evidence.
Upon hearing Wei Huan's response, Yang sheng raised his head and continued, "Yes, I did investigate. However, you should also know that verifying a human's identity as a demon involves crossing government boundaries. It's not that difficult, but it does take time. Currently, I have only two pieces of information: first, you're a human, and second, you don't have a human citizenship."
Wei Huan's reflexes were quicker, and he responded without hesitation, "Of course, because I'm from the Dark Zone."
Yang sheng looked into his eyes, remained silent for a few seconds, and then continued, "I actually don't care whether this school gains another human student. In my view, any race can enter Shanhai to pursue education."
"What you care about is whether my intentions are pure," Wei Huan directly saw through Yang sheng intent.
Yang sheng was an honest and straightforward person, and since Wei Huan had said it himself, he was equally candid. "Yes, I'm just finding it hard to believe why a human would risk their life to enter Shanhai when you have safe zones to choose from. To put it bluntly, I don't believe your intentions are pure. But I hope for your sake that they are, because otherwise, your consequences won't be favorable."
For some reason, Wei Huan felt that Yang sheng's hostility towards humans had intensified significantly.
"I had no choice," he said, gazing into Yang sheng's eyes with sincerity. He rolled up the sleeve of his patient gown to reveal the dark purplish-black venomous scars on his arm.
"Didn't the doctor tell you I'm infected with the Hook Vine's demon poison? I don't have many days left to live. I'm going to die anyway, so I thought I'd come to Shanhai to try my luck. If, by chance, I can obtain a Soul Reversal Fruit, I might survive. Who doesn't have a will to live? This reason should be convincing enough, shouldn't it?"
Yang sheng remained silent. He finally understood why this human teenager had been unable to move in the latter half of the match. It turned out that he was carrying a deadly poison.
Wei Huan smiled and said, "As an ordinary human, is it difficult to understand the desire to survive?" He looked at his close friend and smiled. "I should have that right, shouldn't I?"
The statement seemed to hit a nerve with Yang sheng. Wei Huan knew that Yang shneg had always been a pacifist among the demon race. Unlike many other demons, he didn't condone bullying or enslaving humans just because of their inherent weaknesses. In Yang sheng's eyes, humans were just another race with different abilities.
However, Yang sheng's response surprised Wei Huan. "Not difficult to understand, but only good people deserve to live."
Yang sheng had indeed changed, and Wei Huan wondered what had happened during the seven years since his death.
Wei Huan looked up and continued, "I might say I'm a good person, and you probably won't believe it, but you'll have a chance to verify whether I'm lying or not."
"It's been almost a week since I was poisoned today, which means I have about six or seven days left to live." He shrugged and smiled, "You can see whether I'm close to death at that time. If I am, it means I didn't lie to you, and there's no need for you to take action. If not, you can still find a way to kick me out of Shanhai."
Wei Huan's words were always impeccable, leaving Yang sheng with no room for rebuttal. It was a feeling Yang sheng was all too familiar with, and when he squinted his eyes at Wei Huan, it conveyed his suspicion.
"What are you looking at?"
Yang sheng lowered his head and pinched his own Shixing acupoint, shaking his head. "I just thought of someone."
Upon hearing this, Wei Huan's heart sank, and he opened his mouth to say something.
"…Never mind," he decided not to continue, simply standing up. "I hope everything you've said is true."
Sensing that Yang sheng had temporarily set aside his doubts, Wei Huan breathed a sigh of relief. Just as he was turning away, he whispered a quiet "thank you." But Yang sheng corrected him, "No, you misunderstood. The one who saved you was Yongzhuo, the referee for your match. He's the one who sent you here for treatment."
What?
Wei Huan couldn't believe it. Since when did Yun Yongzhuo become so benevolent?
"I'm also surprised. Yun Yongzhuo has always adhered to a principle of not getting involved in others' affairs. There's no reason for him to help you."
Yang sheng shrugged, leaving with a parting comment as he closed the door, "It feels like he cares a lot about you, which is quite astonishing."
Wei Huan was left dumbfounded. Could it be that Yun Yongzhuo had developed an interest in this human vessel? It was a thought that left Wei Huan shuddering and touching his own face.
Oh my, could Yun Yongzhuo have a thing for this human disguise?!
Wei Huan couldn't believe it. He shook his head in his mind, tugging at the hospital gown he was wearing. With this slender figure and face, he could be considered attractive at best. How could he compare to his original appearance as Xiao Jiu Feng? Back then he was Xiao Jiu Feng, he barely paid any attention to him. How come he was suddenly so caring now just because of this new human disguise?
There was a smartphone on the bedside table. Wei Huan picked it up and used the dark screen to examine his current face. He looked left, then right, before tossing the phone back onto the table and pulling the blanket over his head.
As soon as Jing Yun pushed the door open and entered the room, he heard muffled complaints coming from beneath the bunched-up blanket.
"Tsk, no taste, absolutely no taste."
