I Am the Only Human Here - Chapter 16
After the sorting ceremony, the new students from each academy were guided by their respective teachers to organize their dormitories and classes.
Wei Huan, however, remained preoccupied. He couldn't fathom the origin of this supposed fire within him and how it had manifested within a human body.
A fire mouse, only half a meter tall and wearing glasses, led a group of students into a classroom. "Combat Readiness Class students, please take your seats according to your names. Your counselor will be here soon to explain everything."
Wei Huan followed the others into the classroom. Some young demon creatures, clearly disapproving of him, jostled him with mocking expressions.
Their immaturity was striking. They were university students, yet they resorted to such campus bullying.
Wei Huan's brow twitched as he surveyed the classroom. Above each seat hung a glowing red nameplate. He was unfamiliar with his new name, "Wei Heng," but he finally located it in a corner and took a seat.
Despite entering Yansui, Wei Huan couldn't grasp the reality or the reason behind it. If he truly possessed fire attributes, why was he still human?
He tried to sense demon qi within his body but found nothing. This was unquestionably a human body with no trace of demon potential.
Yun Yang's words lingered in his mind: "Your body holds a flame." Wei Huan lowered his head, snapping his fingers repeatedly, but all that echoed was a mere clap. He even tried clapping, yet there was no sign of flames.
"It's so noisy."
A familiar voice interrupted his thoughts. It was Yang Ling, the person he had knocked out. She had two small braids in her hair, donning Yansui Academy's wine-red uniform with a golden Vermilion Bird pattern embroidered on it.
With her almond-shaped eyes, she resembled a little princess and said, "What are you staring at? Want another beating from me?"
Wei Huan put on a playful smile and responded, "Who am I talking to? Our old acquaintance, right? You're at Yansui too, I assume?" He patted his mouth, adding, "Of course, the young miss has arrived at Yansui. Your Scarlet Lotus True Fire is outstanding. You'll be the brightest star on the battlefield in the future…"
Yang Ling said, "Enough with the flattery. You don't need to." Despite her words, a smile played at the corners of her mouth. She tilted her head to study Wei Huan. "You're not exactly powerful, yet you've been placed in Yansui. It seems that old tree spirit Yun Yang is getting more and more perplexed."
Wei Huan agreed, "Indeed, he's quite confused."
Yang Ling continued, "I can say that, but you can't."
Wei Huan blinked and said, "If elder sister can, why can't younger sister?"
Yang Ling replied, "You!" Realizing Wei Huan was about to provoke her, she softened her tone. "Alright, alright, you can, I can't, you win."
Wei Huan chuckled, "Well, I suppose the tree spirit just randomly placed me in Yansui."
Yang Ling's pigtails brushed across his face, and she playfully retorted, "Nonsense! The selection at Shanhai can't be that haphazard."
Wei Huan smoothly adapted, "Exactly! I'm not talking nonsense, am I?" He emphasized, "A man's mouth can be quite devilish."
Yang Ling was about to respond, but she abruptly stopped and lowered her finger, directing her gaze elsewhere.
A tall girl entered the classroom, also clad in Yansui Academy's wine-red uniform. She had long, straight black hair and three finely braided strands on the right side of her head. A white fur tassel dangled from her right earlobe, reaching her slender shoulder.
As she walked, her nine beautiful fox tails swayed behind her.
A fox? Wei Huan wondered. During his school days, nine-tailed foxes existed, but they were typically male. Despite their striking appearance, their talents were often unremarkable. They kept humans as pets, indulging in constant revelry.
It was common knowledge that nine-tailed foxes often gave birth to extraordinarily beautiful women, enchanting. However, the girl before Wei Huan possessed delicate features and fox-like eyes, yet her overall demeanor emanated a unique and commanding presence.
One peculiar detail caught his attention: at the inner corners of her eyes, she had two vermilion moles, one on each side, facing the other. These moles were the most captivating feature of her face.
As the girl entered the classroom, Wei Huan muttered, "The academy's beauty has arrived." He quickly added, remembering Yang Ling seated beside him, "Not that you're not pretty; your style is…"
His words were abruptly interrupted when he noticed Yang Ling stiffening and blushing, her wide eyes fixed on the nine-tailed girl who had just entered the room.
Wei Huan extended his hand and waved it in front of Yang Ling's eyes. "Are you okay?"
"I-I'm fine," Yang Ling quickly lowered her head and pretended to read a book, flipping the pages noisily. Wei Huan chuckled and playfully stopped her from flipping the book, turning it upside down. "You're holding it the wrong way."
Startled, Yang Ling hastily stashed the book in a drawer.
"Hey, Miss, do you owe her money?" Wei Huan gestured toward the seated nine-tails. "Who is she?"
Yang Ling blurted out, "I definitely don't! You're the one who owes money, you silly human!"
Wei Huan chuckled awkwardly. "Silly human" wasn't a typical insult.
Yang Ling added, "She's a nine-tailed fox named Yanshan Yue, and she's incredibly powerful, exceptionally powerful." She gazed at Yanshan Yue with admiration and emphasized, "Sister Shan Yue is this year's top scorer in the Shanhai entrance exam!"
What? She's the top scorer? Wei Huan found his savior!
Filled with determination, he jumped up, ready to approach Yanshan Yue, but Yang Ling pulled him back to his seat. "What are you doing?"
"I need to talk to her!" Without hesitation, Wei Huan leaned on Yang Ling's desk, flipped over it, and rushed toward Yanshan Yue. His expression was earnest. "Student Yanshan, I'd like to speak with you."
Yanshan Yue raised her eyes, and her gaze wasn't as icy as Wei Huan had expected. It was more like she was regarding a small animal. She replied calmly, "You're the human."
"Can we talk in private?" Wei Huan regretted his lack of acting skills. He couldn't cry on the spot, so he managed a pitiful and vulnerable expression. "I have something really important to discuss, please."
Yanshan Yue stared directly at him. "Right here."
"Not here," Wei Huan glanced at the other students who were now curious. "There are too many people around."
"Here will do," Yanshan Yue extended her index and middle fingers, casually sketching a coin-sized circle in the air.
In an instant, the black circle expanded rapidly like an inflating black hole. A burst of white light, and suddenly, only Wei Huan and Yanshan Yue remained, surrounded by a tranquil forest, far from the noisy classroom.
The illusion of the nine-tailed fox.
Only now did Wei Huan breathe a sigh of relief. This nine-tailed fox was much more approachable than she appeared. Quite unlike Yun Yongzhu, who was genuinely aloof. It seemed his pitiful and helpless expression had worked wonders. He wished he could have shed some tears on the spot.
"Go ahead."
When Yanshan Yue spoke, Wei Huan dropped his pitiful act. "Oh, yes."
With determination, he knelt on the ground with a thud. "Sister Nine-Tails, please save this child!"
