Only Human Here 9
I Am the Only Human Here - Chapter 9
The exam is crucial, the exam is crucial. Wei Huan patted his forehead, reminding himself that thinking about other things now was redundant. He had to stay at Shanhai first and find a way to cure the Hook Kiss poison. Ever since he woke up, it had been a solo journey, and with no trace of his supernatural powers, he was at a disadvantage. As for Jingyun's words… Wei Huan shook his head; he couldn't even protect this young Zhongming, let alone think about anything else.
Wei Huan thought about his childhood friend, Yang sheng. He wondered how Yang Sheng had been doing all these years since he left. But Yang sheng was the eldest son of the Bifang clan, and he was so talented. He probably stayed at Shanhai like Yun Yongzhuo.
As he emerged from behind the stairs, he hesitated about whether he should tell Yang sheng about his reincarnation. But right now, he was a dangerous person, with human research institutes chasing him, and if Yang sheng knew about the Hook Kiss poison, he would surely try to obtain a Soul-Returning Fruit.
Wei Huan abandoned that idea; it wasn't the right time. He couldn't risk involving Yang sheng.
He glanced at his wrist; the dark purple poison gas had only reached his forearm, with some distance to go before reaching his fingertips.
There's still time; let's get enrolled first.
When he raised his head, he saw Jingyun extending his arm and waving at him. Although Jingyun couldn't speak, his gestures were expressive. Wei Huan walked over, and this time they exited Bunyu Building through the main entrance.
"How did your exam go?" Jingyun, who had become more animated in Wei Huan's presence, asked, "I didn't expect the written test to be easier than I thought. Maybe I can make it."
"Don't worry, I guarantee you'll make it. Not only will you pass, but you'll also get into the Fuyao Academy," Wei Huan smiled.
Jingyun was cautious by nature, and before Wei Huan finished speaking, he tried to cover Wei Huan's mouth, whispering, "Why are you so sure?"
Wei Huan removed his hand from Jingyun's, "Well, you see, my mouth has been blessed, so when I say you can do it, you definitely can."
After they came out, they were led by the volunteers in front of Bunyu Building to the dormitory for candidates. Wei Huan hardly slept a wink that night; his mind was filled with memories of his past life.
To protect an innocent human child, Wei Huan's wing had been half blown away by artillery fire.
"That's a monster! Get over here!"
The child left his embrace, confused. Trapped within the formation, Wei Huan couldn't move. Numerous Ninth Phoenix doppelgängers tried to leave his body, desperately tearing apart. Yet, they could only remain confined. The terrifying sensation of splitting apart haunted him forever.
On the battlefield, Wei Huan became a living target, pierced by countless bullets and shells, blood flowing freely on the ground, blurring his vision.
He faintly felt that moment when he closed his eyes was filled with regret.
Memories remained fragmented and unrepairable. He couldn't inherit the glory of the Ninth Phoenix family, couldn't become a hero, and couldn't return to Shanhai alive… There were just too many regrets.
The next morning, Jingyun hurriedly found Wei Huan and took him to a secluded place, looking rather mysterious. Wei Huan hadn't slept well all night and yawned, "What's going on? Are we checking the results already?"
Jingyun took out a small bottle of blue liquid from his pocket and handed it to Wei Huan.
"What's this?" Wei Huan asked, examining the liquid in the sunlight.
"It's the juice of the Floating Fruit, mixed with a medicinal herb concoction prepared by my mother, who is a demon physician. You're in a human body, and if you make it to the practical exam, you won't be able to compete with demons. Right now…"
Jingyun hesitated to choose his words carefully, "Right now, the relationship between demons and humans is quite tense. If you drink this, your stamina will increase, and your body will feel much lighter."
Hearing this, Wei Huan immediately put the small bottle down. "I can't accept this. Give it to me," he said, grabbing Jingyun's hand and returning the vial, "Hold on to it. Don't lose it."
Jingyun grew anxious, "Do you think I'm trying to deceive you? I'm not. Here, let me demonstrate." He unscrewed the bottle cap and took a sip, "See, no poison. Although it's made from herbs, my mother said it's beneficial for humans too, a rare tonic. Please trust me."
Wei Huan, of course, trusted him. He just didn't want to use this method, and if Jingyun drank all of it, his chances of success in the practical exam might be even greater. There was no need for Jingyun to do this for him.
But Jingyun pushed the small bottle to Wei Huan's lips. Wei Huan hesitated, torn between drinking or not. In the end, he relented. Seeing him obediently drink it, Jingyun pushed his glasses up and exclaimed, "Great!"
"Why are you so happy?" Wei Huan handed the small bottle back to him. The taste of the liquid left a peculiar sensation, "Drinking this stuff is like having crushed dandelions mixed with honey."
Jingyun looked surprised, "You've tasted dandelions?!"
Wei Huan, closing his eyes in resignation, said, "Of course not. I just said that."
Jingyun gazed at him, feeling that he was an interesting person, the kind he admired but couldn't become. "I hope we can both pass," he said, adjusting his glasses, "You've been helping me all along. Without you, I wouldn't have made it this far. So, I hope you can make it to the end too."
"This step isn't much. After winning the practical exam, you'll officially become a member of Shanhai. Then, you'll probably be assigned to Fuyao, and you'll have so much freedom," Wei Huan said, feeling refreshed by the aftertaste of the medicinal herb concoction. "Fuyao Academy is the best."
Jingyun suddenly laughed.
Seeing him laugh, Wei Huan asked, "What's so funny?"
"You talk as if you're already a student at Fuyao Academy," Jingyun chuckled like a child. Wei Huan panicked internally and quickly tried to fix it. "No, um… I… My idol used to be at Fuyao."
Jingyun looked surprised, "Your idol is a demon? Which demon is it?"
Wei Huan cleared his throat and said with utmost seriousness, "The Ninth Phoenix."
"Ninth Phoenix…" Jingyun's expression shifted slightly, hesitating. "You mean that little Ninth Phoenix?"
Engaging in some self-praise, Wei Huan promptly confirmed, "Yes."
"Oh, I see…" Jingyun hesitated, and in the end, he didn't say much more. He awkwardly changed the subject, "I've heard that Fuyao Academy has the most relaxed atmosphere. I wonder what the other academies are like?"
Wei Huan's eyes darted around, "I can answer that! But keep in mind, I've only heard about it. People from Shangshan Academy have gentle personalities, probably because they spend most of their time in the water. But the merfolk from Shangshan are stunningly beautiful."
"Jiahui isn't bad either. The young ladies there are all dressed up, and their school uniforms are gorgeous, like traditional qipaos. As for Yansui…" Wei Huan shook his head, "Well, I heard that everyone at Yansui is a battle maniac, a single wrong word, and you're headed for a cremation ground."
"That sounds a bit scary…" Jingyun listened with enthusiasm as Wei Huan continued, "So, whatever you do, don't mess with the folks from Yansui Academy."
After chatting for a while, they decided to go check the results. The night and day in Shanhai offered completely different views. At night, when the Starblossom Tree blossomed, it resembled a brilliant constellation, but in the daylight, its petals closed, casting a hundred shadows.
"These leaves are making me dizzy," Jingyun remarked.
Wei Huan chuckled, "It's just to teach students at Shanhai to concentrate. But I think it's the principal's eccentric taste." He added, "I've only heard about it. Look, there are so many people at the main building."
As they approached, the demons below the main building sensed the scent of a human and turned their heads, looking at the human examinee who was getting closer to the exam results board.
"Why is everyone looking at you…?" Jingyun found the situation somewhat unsettling. "And their expressions are a bit strange."
Wei Huan immediately realized the situation was turning awkward and internally cursed himself.
"Jingyun, go up and check our results quickly."
Jingyun let out an "Oh" and flew to the screen, slowing down to examine the results carefully.
Not long after, his voice echoed from above.
"Wei… Wei Heng!"
From a distance, Wei Huan, who was looking up, saw Jingyun's startled expression.
"You… You got the first place in the written test!"
