How to Raise a Baby in an Apocalypse - Chapter 19 - Whether Alive Or Not
Chen Jiao huffed at the sight of An Ran’s back and laid on her back again, turning sideways with her back facing An Ran as well. She pulled the blanket up and stared at the window, too angry to speak further.
The ward fell silent for a moment, and the banging of the zombies outside the door lessened. Gradually, the noise dissipated. However, before An Ran and Hu Zhen could catch their breath, Chen Jiao’s whimpering filled the room. She was clever this time, crying softly like a mosquito. Despite the faint crying, An Ran and Hu Zhen could not ignore it either.
An Ran was extremely frustrated. Rather than keeping quiet, she turned to face Hu Zhen and said,
“Well, I’ve been thinking, our only way out now is to climb down through the window. Once we’re outside, we can find help and bring them back to save our children. Time is crucial, as our children have been isolated from us for over 15 hours. If they’re alive, they haven’t been fed for at least 5 hours. They won’t last much longer if we delay any longer.”
Whether alive or not, An Ran needed to see her daughter with her own eyes.
She analyzed that 15 hours ago, this hospital was still functioning as normal. However, there might have been some who had already been infected and became zombies, as she remembered there were reports of thugs on the streets a day ago on the television. But she wasn’t sure if it was related to the disease spreading in this hospital.
Also, this hospital certainly wasn’t the first to be infected by the disease. She still remembered after she gave birth to her daughter, the doctor had appeared perfectly normal when they came to check on her daughter’s temperature and jaundice. The doctor mentioned that the jaundice levels were a bit high, and there was a slight fever. As a result, they had instructed her to take her daughter to the Neonatal Unit on the fifth floor. At that time, everything had been normal.
This hospital had likely undergone its transformation around 5 hours ago. At least that was what An Ran assumed when she noticed the young nurse had a problem 5 hours ago.
If the people in this hospital had been infected around the same time, then her daughter had been hungry for more than five hours, assuming that her daughter was still alive and had not turned into a zombie yet. She could only hope that there were no signs of infection in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Otherwise, she feared that her daughter might have already become a meal for the zombie doctors and nurses.
“This is the fourth floor!” Hu Zhen, lying on the bed, grimaced. She shook her head and continued, “Also, I had a cesarean section, I can’t move.”
“Then you stay here and I’ll go find help!” An Ran sat up and examined the bedsheet, “I can tie the bedsheets together and climb down through the window.”
With that, An Ran got up and started looking through her maternity bag. For starters, she needed to find a sharp tool to cut the bedsheets in half so that they would be long enough to reach the first floor from the fourth floor. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a suitable tool in her maternity bag, except for a pair of baby nail cutters!
“Use this.” Hu Zhen said as she gritted her teeth, pushing herself up to get a fruit knife from a drawer with sweat glistening on her forehead. She then handed the knife to An Ran.
The fruit knife was about the length of a palm, with a light green sheath, and a green and white handle. From a quick glance, it was a typical cheap fruit knife that you would find in a supermarket for a few yuan. However, having such low-cost fruit knife was better than nothing in their current situation.
