How to Raise a Baby in an Apocalypse - Chapter 20 - She Saw Herself As A Mother Now
An Ran took the fruit knife that Hu Zhen handed to her and began to remove her bloodstained bedsheet. She folded it in half and used the fruit knife to cut it apart. Grabbing the cut-up bedsheet, she tore it forcefully, making a “ripping” sound, splitting the sheet into two halves.
Under normal circumstances, An Ran would not be able to do such a strenuous task, especially considering she had just given birth 15 hours ago. But now, she couldn’t afford to think about that. She didn’t see herself as a maternity patient; she saw herself as a mother now!
The torn bedsheets, when joined together, were about two to three meters long. Still, this wasn’t enough. An Ran then began to mess with her duvet cover, but it still wasn’t sufficient. Hu Zhen, lying on the bed, hastily took off her blanket and handed it over to An Ran as she said, “Let’s disassemble this blanket too. It should be barely enough, right?”
“It should be enough.”
An Ran frowned, and her whole body started sweating again. She didn’t know if the bedsheets and blankets were enough, since she has always been a person to follow orders. She also had never done anything like this before, especially when she had never engaged in activities like climbing walls or anything similar. An Ran wasn’t good at measuring the height of the building using bed sheets either. If it was off by a meter or two, she would be done for when she jumps down.
Having tied the torn bedsheets and blankets together into a makeshift rope, An Ran began to fasten the rope to one end of the metal frame at the foot of Chen Jiao’s bed due to her bed being the closest to the window. Her bed was heavy too, and besides her bed, there didn’t seem to be any other suitable place to attach the rope.
However, before An Ran could secure a knot, Chen Jiao, who was lying on the bed suddenly sat up and shouted at An Ran, “Can you let me be in peace?”
She found An Ran’s actions too annoying. One moment she was tearing fabric, and the next moment she was fiddling around with things around her bed. With the terrifying situation outside, this woman of bed number 16 was not stopping anytime soon, and it was getting on her nerves.
An Ran shot a glance at her and decided to ignore this spoiled woman. She simply tied the rope at the head of Chen Jiao’s bed and threw the other end of the rope out of the window. Leaning against the window and looking at the awning, she contemplated whether she could successfully jump from the fourth floor awning to the third floor awning while holding the rope.
Clearly, An Ran’s dismissive attitude towards Chen Jiao had completely angered her. She knelt on the bed, determined to untie the rope An Ran had secured on the post at the foot of her bed, and angrily said, “What’s the point of doing all this? Can all these commotions really help us get out? Our only option right now is to wait for rescue!”
“What’s the point?! At least I’m trying to do something!”
At the sight of Chen Jiao actually trying to untie the rope, An Ran pushed her away and sent her tumbling from the bed to the floor. Chen Jiao fell and moaned on the floor, seemingly in considerable pain. An Ran was somewhat taken aback by her own actions. She had been alive for 23 years, and this was the first time she had physically confronted someone. She had just slapped Chen Jiao moments ago, and now with such considerable force, she had managed to push Chen Jiao off the bed.
The slap didn’t cause much harm to Chen Jiao, but pushing her off the bed was more serious. An Ran looked at Chen Jiao lying on the floor, moaning. Her first thought was, “This is bad. I’ve lost control of my temper. I hope Chen Jiao won’t blackmail me for this.”
But then she thought about the chaotic situation outside, as well as the absence of surveillance cameras in the hospital room. Even if Chen Jiao were to blackmail her, there was little she could do about it. An Ran’s priority was to get out, get some help, and save her child!
