Be My Heroine Chapter 31

My Lady, Please Become My Heroine

Then, I wish you good luck (2)

This time, she did not bring Claire with her, so Beth rode in a carriage that rattled – even though she did not like it, she had to borrow it and head to the mansion.

Beth rested her chin and gazed deeply at the village beyond the window.

James was amazed that Beth tracked him down, but he said nothing.  He knew that if he asked for the source of the information anyway, Beth would not give any answer.

James wants to track down Theodor, but all of the guild members in charge of that mission disappeared or died.

Beth, who flicked her fingers as she thought about the novel, pressed her hand against her chest because of an unpleasant feeling.

Even Beth did not know who he truly was, the description in the novel only stated that he had golden eyes that shone like the sun, but a very ugly image, as if he had been burned by fire, that dominated his whole face.

So all of the readers thought they hid it because it’s so ugly!

Anyway, they won’t meet the character until the second half.

If James didn’t get too greedy, he would live. Beth informed him that she would let him know any information she had, when she made a deal with him, but she did not offer to let him know a way to live.

How can I offer what I don’t know?  Beth thought, and frowned.

Just in time, the carriage stopped near the Count and the coachman informed Beth that she had arrived. Beth thanked the coachman, got off, and slowly walked into the back door.

With the smell from the open kitchen, she guessed this night it was a cream stew. Even Claire, who doesn’t like carrots very much, ate the carrots in the cream stew without frowning even once, so Beth was satisfied with today’s menu.

Anne, who took out a bag from the kitchen, ran to see Beth.

“Beth! What are you doing here?!”

“I just got back.”

No one pointed out that Beth had wandered outside which was unusual for a maid.

Of course, she didn’t ask. It was useful but she had no reason to ask.

“Go to the lady’s room! It’s a big deal!”

Anne wasn’t as fussy as Julia. If she says it’s a big deal, it would be really big. Beth walked quickly toward Claire’s room.

And she tried to open Claire’s door, she stopped and calmly knocked on the door.

“My lady, this is Beth. Can I come in?”

There was a moment of silence and an answer came. “Come in, Beth.”

It was Kedrick’s voice not Claire.

Beth opened the door.

“….!”

Claire was seen with a slightly reddened cheek.

Kedrick had carefully brought a bottle of cold water to Claire’s cheek and Ryan looked fidgeting around Claire when he saw Beth come in.

Beth asked Kedrick as her face hardened and slowly approached them.

“What is this?”

“The madame slapped her on the cheek.”

“Kedrick, why didn’t you stop her?”

“Be, Beth, don’t…”

Claire pulled her eyes up to Beth, grabbed her hand with her small hand, and looked up.

“Kedrick stopped it. Really.”

The Countess saw Kedrick’s face and paused for a moment, but strode towards Claire and slapped her across the cheek.

The reason was absurd. She was in the garden and tried to enjoy tea time after a long time, and the nasty smell was what put her in a bad mood.

When Claire was slapped, Kedrick grabbed the Countess’s arm with an unusually confused face. It was an act that he should never do in his original position. Kedrick was sentenced to a six-month pay cut.

“Well, it’s just that.”

Kedrick lightly threw a joke, saying he was worried that his hand would be cut in exchange for grabbing her arm.

That’s what happened. Beth narrowed her eyes.

The Countess probably needed an object of anger. She recently said that she couldn’t get in touch with those she thought were her friends, and the number of invitations has decreased significantly compared to before.

The Countess just happened to see Claire. If she had seen the servants, she would have vented her anger on the servants and not on Claire.

I’m at fault.

Although she knew that the Countess had become sensitive these days, she left the mansion and placed Claire in danger.

I should have just taken Claire out with me Beth thought with a rare show of regret.

Would it be a relief that she didn’t get bruised or swollen on her cheek even after being hit by an adult? Beth looked at Claire bitterly and hesitated then swallowed her soreness into a smile.

Ryan continued to look at the Countess as he if didn’t like the Countess, and made such vulgar curses. Beth thought about how he learned that curse.

Beth was lost in thought thinking that she hadn’t been doing much for Claire lately. It would not be a bad idea to take this opportunity to clean up.

“I’m going to get busy now.”

“Beth has always been busy.” Kedrick laughed at what Beth had done so far.

Come to think of it ……

From a certain point onwards, when he was on the lookout for her, so Beth naturally began to let Kedrick know what she had been doing.

She knows he’s a questionable human, but he at least wasn’t on the side of the Countess.

It’s a wonder.

Beth said nothing, as she rolled her eyes, bowed her head and said,”My lady, then I will prepare

a meal.”

“… hmm!” Claire nodded, reassuringly, as Beth went out without saying anything.

Beth silently walked to the kitchen, and wondered what to do to send the Countess a message without affecting Claire.

Her steps stopped.

Outside the window, she saw the Countess and her maids return from their leisure tea time.

Beth didn’t know if the Countess  wanted to appeal to her knowledge as she had a thick book in her hand.

As she stared at something in that book, Beth saw a maid next to the Countess.

She was always on edge when she saw Claire and was always sarcastic. She became a nasty maid after she ruined Claire’s dress.

What’s the maid’s name was, Beth pondered. She frowned as she might need to think of it.

The name…..Was it Tara?

She seemed to have had two letters in her name, but she didn’t remember it because she wasn’t a very useful person. The memories of her sitting and chatting with her colleagues on the day of her party began to bloom in her mind.

“Ah.”

At that time, Tara got tough after being placed in charge by the Countess.

If she poked it well, she could make a very favourable situation for herself, and the only victim would not be just that maid, so Beth left with a smile.

For reference, it was just something Beth doesn’t remember and Tara’s real name was Jenny.

(T/N: You might get confused that neither Tara nor Jenny is a two-letter name ^^ But since Korean alphabets are mostly a set of consonants and vowels, their names actually only use 2 letters, [Ta-Ra] and [Jen-Ny].)

Claire and Ryan could have a similar meal – maybe because he had a background that touched many employee’s hearts. The chef even added to Ryan’s share, saying to her that he could secretly take away the portion for the child’s food.

As she watched the kids enjoy the hot, creamy stew and bread, Beth handed Kedrick a sandwich that was allotted to the servants.

“Don’t eat now.”

“I know that much.”

In the beginning, Kedrick was told to eat what the Count’s soldiers ate. However, he said that he hated them because they were sweaty and hated getting stuck eating meals at them during the servant’s mealtime.

This situation was not was not like the first time he had eaten with Beth.

Beth had no idea why he suddenly changed his attitude. It was strange to say that it might have been because she rejected him.

There was something more different.

Kedrick looked through it as if checking the contents of the sandwich, then put it in his jacket and asked Beth.

“So, what’s your plan?”

“What are you going to do?”

“I’m trying to help.”

“On an empty stomach?”

Kedrick sometimes told Beth that it was a give and take even as a joke. As he knew what caused her to say that, he said with a soft eye smile. “Beth, I guess you’ve forgotten, but my job is to protect Lady Claire.

“Right.”

“The additional task is to protect you.”

“What?”

He laughed at Beth, and looked at her with a stupid smile, and Claire said she had given him another mission.

“And that was to protect you.”

“It’s my first time hearing that.”

“You didn’t ask.”

“If I ask, will you answer everything?”

“Except for my personal information.”

In the end, it meant he wouldn’t say everything. Beth looked at his wiggling eyebrows, then looked straight ahead again.

“If your job is to protect her, there is a problem with the expression of helping.”

“Then we will correct it. We will do it together.”

The more people in the plan, the better, but the fewer people who know the content, the better.

In the process of progressing work, the more people there are, the more advantageous, but in order to not say anything until after the end, it was necessary to have fewer people.

In that sense, Kedrick was a truly coveted talent. He was more serious than she thought, except for the occasional rushing around of people and the light-hearted behavior.

Most of all, the reason he liked Beth was that she was kinder to the children than she looked.

In the first place, it was Beth herself who wanted to pick a man who was a little clumsy, so there was no reason to say anything about his behavior.

“Kedric, can you do anything I ask of you?”

“Beth, you must have forgotten it, but I have been sold as a commodity by you.”

“You were.” Beth replied shamelessly, pressing down the remorse that arose.

“It’s probably easier than that.”

“What is it?”

“That’s….”

***

On a dark night, Jenny suffered from insomnia again today. The work as the Countess’ maid was to be given to many maisd, but in reality, it was not.

She got angry with her employees when there was something she didn’t like, and these days it has been getting worse and worse, it’s still hard to live and was like hell.

The senior maids, who served the countess, and her fellow maids quit slowly. Now, the only maids left around her were those who had served the Countess for many years and herself.

What else to do tomorrow?

The Countess would ask her to do something ridiculous and if she didn’t do it, she punished her.

She did it only to Jenny.

With her stress filled to the end of her head, Jenny thought that she wanted to quit her job but then the Countess threatened she would not write a recommendation letter if she quit within this year so she was lost on what to do.

“Oh dear.”

When the tears in Jenny’s eyes became muddy and fell one by one, a man’s voice reached her ears “Why are you crying here?”

As she lifted her head, a man with an unknown face stood before her.

Kedrick, a man with a non-human beauty and was always attached to Beth’s side. So when she looked at Beth, she could only see that handsome face.

Sometimes people who faced Kedrick asked him if he had a lover, but he laughed and said he had no intention of dating anyone, and drove a nail to many people’s hearts. Of course, it wasn’t long before everyone forgot.

So Jenny couldn’t understand why he was talking to her suddenly, so she couldn’t even think of wiping the tears that had flowed down, so she stood with a stupid face and looked at Kedrick.

“Is there anything troubling you?”

“Oh, no, so…”

Only then, did he notice that she was crying, Jenny shook her head and turned around. Kedrick streaked up and whispered in a tender voice “Don’t cry alone. I’m worried.”

“Okay, that’s it!!” The sadness burst forth and she screamed. She was surprised at the tone was afraid she would wake people up, so she closed her mouth.

“You, you’re not interested in me….” It was a long time ago when the rumors said that Kedrick liked Beth.

Kedrick tilted his head as if Jenny didn’t know what he meant, and he smiled and said, “What would you do if I did?”

“.… Yeah?”

The moonlight lit him brightly and the stars twinkled in his eyes. Usually the sounds of the wind that blew softly and the brush of the grass could be heard, but she only heard his voice now as if he had used magic.

“I’m interested. Inyou.”

His eyes glistened. The moment he made eye contact, Jenny looked at him like she was possessed.

He laughed and called her name.

“Jenny. “

Pick up a young maid in charge of the Madam. There is one who is absolutely annoying.
