Former Assassin - Arc 1 Early Life - Chapter 7

“—Engagement? Rosemary?”

“Indeed.”

The day after the tea party, Amaryllis told us something outrageous during breakfast.

“It isn’t official yet, but I do hope that the other party will agree.”

Does that person not know of the catastrophe that was yesterday’s tea party? Weren’t all eyes on us?

“Mother, I refuse to be betrothed to a stranger.”

But that’s what marriage in aristocratic society is basically about.

“Yes, I understand. If you decide that you aren’t a good fit after spending time together, you can just refuse.”

“I see. All right, then.”

If she can easily refuse, does that mean the other party is of equal or lower status?

But nothing comes to mind when I think of those who have equal stature…

…Even if the status is ‘lower’, the rank itself can’t be higher than a count.

Judging from her abominable behavior yesterday, there may come a day when she incurs the wrath of a powerful aristocrat.

Let’s hope I won’t be there to witness it.

If so, her suitor probably wanted to be affiliated with our family regardless of the risks.

Our family had a wide range of businesses, so it might be a transactional relationship.

Since the other party wanted Rosemary, the second daughter, instead of me, there was a high possibility that he was the eldest son.

Is there anyone who fits the bill amongst those who attended yesterday’s tea party? Someone who hails from a business-oriented family and is of a lower rank…

I eliminated the possible candidates in my head as I tried to guess who Rosemary’s suitor was…

…When suddenly, Amaryllis said something so outrageous that I almost spurted out my tea.

Thanks to that, I was able to relax a bit.

“I’m sorry, Mother. What did you just say?”

“—The person who asked for Rosemary’s hand in marriage is His Highness the Second Prince, Heinrich.”

No way.

I stood up so hard that my chair toppled over.

“Are you going to accept that offer? That’s just insane.”

“Oh my, why are you so flustered, Serena? The royal family has taken an interest in our family, yet you don’t seem too happy about it.”

“That’s right, Older Sister. Don’t be jealous just because I was chosen.”

Amaryllis was confused, while Rosemary smiled triumphantly.

They don’t understand anything.

“—Mother, didn’t you mention earlier that if she decides they aren’t a good match, she can just call off the engagement? Do you really think you can do that to royalty? Breaking off an engagement that has been decided is an act of blasphemy. Even now, she’s shunned in the social circles as a former commoner. Imagine the outcome when she becomes a divorcee! How preposterous.

“—And then there’s Prince Heinrich, who’s rumored to have some behavioral issues. His mother, a concubine, is an ambitious person. She’ll most likely try to get her son to become the Crown Prince. Do you understand what this means for us? Being engaged to Prince Heinrich means that we’ll inevitably be involved in a battle for the throne! The Duke of the Violet family doesn’t have the strength to overcome that vortex! You should refuse this offer of engagement. This kind of decision shouldn’t be made when the Head of the Household is absent in the first place!”
