Former Assassin - Arc 1 Early Life - Chapter 8
Despite my objection, Rosemary went ahead and became engaged to Heinrich.
It was most likely that Heinrich’s mother, the concubine, was eyeing the Duke Violet family’s extensive business and wealth.
In addition, considering our lack of presence in social circles and at court, we weren’t a threat to the King. If it had been any other influential figure, the fight for the throne would become extremely fierce, hence the King’s approval of this engagement between Rosemary and Heinrich.
This is the worst.
Regardless, the Duke Violet family was inevitably drawn into the fight for the throne.
As for Heinrich, no one could say whether or not he’d vie for the throne. Regardless of the person’s will, the conflict of succession would always occur due to the opinions of those around them.
“I need to swiftly gather my things and depart.”
I wasn’t particularly hung up on my current lifestyle.
For the sake of survival, I could easily abandon it. I wasn’t a sheltered and ignorant Duke’s daughter; I could survive even if I was no longer a noble.
Thus, I quickly packed my things. Since it’d be troublesome if the servants noticed me, I fled through the window.
The fact that my room was on the second floor didn’t stop me, a former assassin. I could easily jump off the balcony to a nearby tree before swiftly making my exit.
“Well, that’s one way to greet a guest.”
“…”
Am I cursed?
I had leapt over the fence from one tree to another and landed on the road.
I was so close.
Unfortunately, a horse-drawn carriage barely passed me before stopping. Prince Evan descended from it.
“Were you planning on going somewhere? If you like, I can send you there.”
“While I appreciate the offer, I can’t possibly trouble Your Highness. Please don’t mind me and continue with your work.”
“Now that you mention it, I’ve arrived.”
Huh?
But the carriage was heading in the exact opposite direction of the royal castle. As such, there was little to no chance that he was returning home.
“I came to see you.”
Prince Evan smiled and invited me to join him inside the carriage.
Wanting to stay out of trouble, I intended to turn him down; however, if he were to ask questions in such a place, that would risk the people in the mansion finding out about this.
What should I do?
With him around, there was no way I could run away. I had to do something about it. I was on foot, while he was in a horse-drawn carriage.
It’d be too obvious.
…As expected, taking out the prince wasn’t an option.
I had no choice but to ride the carriage.
“So, what do you need from me? I’m also busy.”
“Are you running away from home?”
“…”
“Let’s see. You left the residence carrying only a bag without accompaniment and weren’t travelling through an appropriate route… And, you caught me off guard by leaping across the wall. That’s a great way to run away from home. Why? Did something happen?”
“It’s personal, so I’m not obligated to tell you.”
“Understandable. I’m still curious, though.”
“Well, you shouldn’t. Don’t concern yourself with it.”
“Is that so? Does it have something to do with the engagement between your step-sister and my younger brother?”
He’s asking, but I’m sure he already knows the answer.
Despite the smile etched on his lips, there was a ferocity in his eyes akin to a predator.
He was cornering me, threatening to sink his fangs into my neck if I provided the wrong answer; perhaps in the hope that I’d yield to the pressure and expose my innermost feelings.
However, I wasn’t so weak as to succumb to this level of pressure.
“No way. How could I not celebrate their engagement? Why don’t we just get straight to the point? Surely, Your Highness wouldn’t have this much free time either.”
“Indeed.”

Translator’s Note:
[Serena in the prev chap] Nah we can’t disrespect the prince.
[Serena now] Ok let’s kill him.
Editor’s Note:
I was also surprised by how blunt she was when talking to him in this chapter- Truly throwing respect out the window o7
