True Daughter 4

The True Daughter Isn't Human - Chapter 4

A’Yang's gaze once again landed on Meng Ji. Xue Yuan bit her lip and immediately reached out to hold onto Meng Ji's arm as if declaring her territorial claim.

"Where's my room?" A’Yang spoke up all of a sudden, catching the others off guard.

"What? Wasn't it said that a place for me to stay had been prepared?" The others fell quiet, and it was Xue Jianping who interrupted the tense silence. "Hu Ma, take her upstairs."

"Of course, Sir."

A’Yang’s room was simple. It seemed apparent that it had been tidied up hastily.

Hu Ma opened the window for her. She had gleaned that this biological daughter wasn't favored by the master and madam.

However, she didn't care much about A’Yang’s attitude. She was just a servant; her duty was to complete her tasks.

"Miss Zhou, the toiletries are ready inside. The nightgown is one that Miss hasn't worn. Please use it. If you're missing anything, just let me know."

"Thank you."

"Then, I'll leave first."

"Alright."

After Hu Ma closed the door, A’Yang closed her eyes, sitting cross-legged on the chair in silence.

Zhou Yang floated around the room, feeling anxious. She didn't understand why A’Yang wasn't leaving.

After a while, A’Yang opened her eyes.

"Leaving? Where are you going?

"Weren't you going to Jingshi University?"

These two sentences left Zhou Yang perplexed. Right, school was about to start, so she would be living on campus.

"Miss Zhou, it's time for dinner." Hu Ma's voice could be heard from outside the room.

A’Yang indeed felt hungry. She pushed open the door and walked out.

They were all sitting in their seats, ready to eat. A’Yang’s gaze swept over everyone, pausing on Meng Ji once again. She was not mistaken; the sensation of that person's presence was indeed there.

However, it was faint.

This implied that it might just be a passing possibility, but this was also the first person related to that person whom A’Yang had encountered so far.

She moved her gaze over the others, and only the seat in front of Meng Ji remained unoccupied, with no bowls or chopsticks set there.

Meng Ji's brows were furrowed tightly. When A’Yang sat across from him, it seemed like he was enduring to the brink.

"Get lost."

No one had expected Meng Ji to be so ruthless. Xue Yuan was about to speak but was silenced by Xue Chen.

They didn't want, nor would they dare, to offend Meng Ji.

Meng Ji had the support of the Meng family, which made them wary of angering him.

His current disapproval of A’Yang also solidified Xue Yuan's place in his heart.

A’Yang rested her hand on the chopsticks, lifting her head to glance at Meng Ji before turning to Hu Ma. "Didn't you hear him? Open the door and let him out."

Hu Ma was a bit flustered.

"You want me to leave?" Meng Ji looked at A’Yang with a playful expression. This woman's tactics were too crude, at least more immature than those women who tried every trick to catch his attention.

A’Yang lips curled upward. Leaning slightly forward, she kept her gaze on Meng Ji.

"When you're a guest, you should behave like one. Would you tell the host to leave when you're at someone else's place? You don’t have any manners, do you?"

The faces of the Xue family turned green.

Who would admit that she was the host?

Meng Ji's expression wasn't any better, but he knew it was her strategy, a scheme to get his attention. He had seen many women like her. "Very well, you've successfully caught my attention."

Xue Yuan's expression changed subtly.

"You also have a knack for making me puke."

Xue Yuan hastily interjected, "Ah Ji, she didn't mean it. She didn't do it on purpose. Don't take it to heart."

"Psh, why would I bother with a wild girl? It's beneath me." Meng Ji put down his chopsticks and wiped his mouth with elegance.

Zhou Yang, who was next to him, was about to explode with anger. Who were these people? How could they be so shameless?

It was indeed shameless, but A’Yang didn't care. Hu Ma handed her a set of bowls and chopsticks, and she ate her meal as if no one else was there.

However, the others were left with no appetite due to her presence.

This daughter seemed quite difficult to deal with.

Wu Meijun was even more anxious, fearing that Meng Ji would be drawn to A’Yang and abandon Xue Yuan.

Originally, Meng Ji's interest was in Xue Yuan. Why should he be pushed aside?

Moreover, being able to connect with the Meng family took quite an effort.

Beyond their expectations was the possibility that Meng Ji might take an interest in Xue Yuan and end up in an engagement with her.

Just based on this, they wouldn't give up on the Meng family.

Fortunately, Meng Ji detested Zhou Yang.

After finishing their meal, the family sat together and chatted. The atmosphere was pleasant. A’Yang wiped her mouth and stood up, walking to the door. She was about to open it and leave when Xue Yuan paused and looked at A’Yang. "Where are you going, Sister?"

"Out."

"You're not familiar with this place. Where are you going? If you get lost, we won't have the time to find you,” Xue Chen spat bluntly.

A’Yang looked at them earnestly, at this family full of malice toward her. She assured them, "It's alright. If I get lost, someone will bring me back."

Meng Ji thought she was talking about him, and he could hardly conceal his disgust. "Dream on. I won't be the one to bring you back."

"Some people think they're irresistible. Being overly confident isn't a virtue."

A’Yang pushed the door open and left.

"Why is Meng Ji so shameless? He really thinks he's a beloved CEO that everyone adores. Clearly, you were referring to your family, but he's so sure it was directed at him. So shameless."

Zhou Yang followed behind A’Yang, incessantly criticizing Meng Ji. She had only encountered such narcissistic men in novels before, but she didn't expect to see one in real life after becoming a ghost.

"By the way, Immortal, where are you going?"

"To find merit." Merit could heal the injuries on Zhou Yang's body. In the Xue family, it was unlikely that they would be presented with an opportunity for merit.

Moreover, facing Meng Ji, especially sensing his aura, she was afraid she might accidentally harm him.

Unfortunately, they had spent several days without any results.

The Xue family members wouldn't care about her. They didn’t even bother to ask her where she was going whenever she left the house every day.

"So, where should we go to find merit?" Zhou Yang asked somewhat dejectedly.

A’Yang didn't know either. She had no specific goal, just wandering aimlessly, unsure of what she should be doing.

Although she didn't get tired after becoming a ghost, dawdling about randomly like this was still boring.

"How about we try under the Tianqiao Bridge? I've seen on TV that many fortune tellers set up their stalls under the bridge."

"The Tianqiao Bridge? Where is it?"

"Let's try to find it."

Before they could find the Tianqiao Bridge, they encountered another female ghost.

"Ah! Ghost!" Zhou Yang screamed in fear.

"Aren't you a ghost too?"

"I—I am a ghost." Zhou Yang moved behind A’Yang in silence. "Although I'm a ghost, I shouldn't be this terrifying, right?"

"Not now. When you first died, you were quite similar to her."

A’Yang’s retort left Zhou Yang speechless, but she firmly believed that she looked better than that female ghost.

The female ghost had a large hole in her forehead, and one eyeball had fallen out of its socket with blood continuously oozing from both places, creating a pool of red, gory liquid on the ground.

Zhou Yang stepped away with caution. Seeing A’Yang standing still, she reached out and tugged on her sleeve.

The way the female ghost walked was quite eerie. Her intact eye was closed as if someone was propping her up and moving her.

"Can she… Can't she see us?"

"Don't know."

"What's her story?"

"She's reliving the moments before her death." A’Yang gaze stayed fixed on the female ghost for quite a while before she started following her.

There were various forms that spirits took after death. Cases like this one involved being trapped by obsession and continuously reliving the process of dying.

They continued to follow the female ghost.

….

"Xue Yuan, what's wrong with you?"

"I—I think I saw my sister." Xue Yuan looked out the car window.

"Your sister? The one your dad adopted?"

Another girl with her hair tied up in a bun also looked over.

Xue Yuan gave a vague response and didn't explain further, letting them misunderstand.

The girl rolled her eyes. "What's so attractive? She's just a country bumpkin."

"I really don't know what your dad was thinking. He could've just given some money and sent her away. Why did he have to bring her home? Yuanyuan, could this be your dad's illegitimate child?"

Xue Jianping took advantage of the situation before it spread too far, presenting himself as a philanthropist who took in an orphan out of pity, which was how he introduced Zhou Yang into the family.

This caused quite a stir within their circle. Behind the scenes, many speculated that she wasn't an adopted daughter at all, but Xue Jianping's illegitimate child.

Xue Yuan's face showed a hint of embarrassment upon hearing those words, but she quickly regained her composure and smiled. "Jiao Jiao, don't spout

nonsense."

The more she reacted this way, the more it confirmed the rumors that Zhou Yang was an illegitimate child.

"Did you hear that your brother said she couldn't take her eyes off Ji Shao the first time they met?"

"She’s really overestimating herself. She should look in the mirror and see what kind of person she is."

Meng Family's young master, Meng Ji, had made it clear that he only cared about Xue Huan, his fiancée, and everyone else was inconsequential.

In just a short while, word spread throughout their social circle. However, the addition of the adopted daughter didn't shake Xue Yuan's status in the least.

It made sense. How could an adopted daughter compare to a legitimate heiress, let alone an illegitimate child?

Those who initially wanted to make fun of Xue Yuan for having an extra sister out of the blue now had to reconsider. After all, she had Meng Ji's protection.

"Since she's your sister, she's also our sister. How about we all give her a big welcoming gift?" suggested the girl with the bun.

"Yes, yes. I agree," another girl chimed in.

"That's not allowed. She's my sister, and you shouldn't startle her."

"Yuanyuan, you're just too soft-hearted. That's why that country bumpkin can pick on you like this. Don't forget, she's the one who dared to catch Ji Shao's eye."

"But…"

"Enough, it's just a small lesson. It won't amount to much. If you can't bear it, just wait for us in the car."

With that, the girl with the bun and her friend got out of the car.

Xue Yuan watched their departing figures, her gaze distant. It was unclear what she was thinking.

"Immortal, there are two people following us." Zhou Yang floated over and then floated back.

"I've known for a while."

"Be careful, I have a feeling they're not friendly."

Instead of following the earthbound spirit any longer, A’Yang turned and entered a small alleyway.
