Be My Heroine Chapter 38

For Count Gordon (2)

Count Gordon’s face burned bright red. He recalled an embarrassing incident where he was humiliated in front of others. Just for this, he pointed his arrow toward Beth.

Granted, she was doing wrong, but Count Gordon did not know of her deeds. He just wanted to push the blame on someone else. He claimed he was humiliated because of Beth. Though Beth met his standards of being a great employee, it still was not enough for his emotions to be relieved by this shame.

Besides, she was just a commoner. There are plenty of better employees elsewhere.

He stroked his shabby beard while he reviewed Petit Salon’s performance. It performed better than expected.

“A lot of things have happened, so I’ll go on a trip for a while.”

“Okay…”

“Don’t worry, I’ll be back soon.”

Beth gently smiled and caressed Claire’s head.

Meanwhile, Ryan stared at Beth while he lingered behind.

He always treated her as an annoying old woman, but he knew Beth rescued him. As a child who fought to survive for so long, he was unable to fully convey his appreciation. And now, being a clever child, Ryan was aware Beth was being kicked out.

“Ryan.”

Beth approached Ryan.

“Beth… I.”

Ryan gave Beth a depressed look. It seemed to be the first time he called her Beth. Beth knew how he felt. With a firm voice, she comforted Ryan.

“It’s all right.”

Beth said, while she made eye contact with him.

“It’s okay, I already told my colleagues.”

When Julia, Anne, and Catherine discovered Beth was dismissed, they were surprised. Beth asked them to care for Ryan since she needed time to settle down. They all nodded without a word.

“While I’m not here…my colleagues will take care of you, so listen to them carefully.”

 “…Yes!”

Ryan firmly nodded his head, and Beth faintly smiled.

One large bag was enough to hold all of her belongings. Its weight was so light, Beth felt it proved she was not part of this place.

Beth left through the employee back door. She had an ominous feeling and if it came true, then it would be best for her to leave quickly.

Then…

 “Oh my.”

Two giant men fell to the floor. They both had a sword in hand. It seemed they intended to harm Beth.

 “Kedrick.”

He lightly kicked the two men to verify they were still alive. Then he smiled at her.

“Beth.”

“Why are you here? You have to protect the Lady.”

“It seems you have forgotten, but you were the one who got me this job.”

That meant that because Beth was fired, so was Kedrick. Beth understood as much and nodded.

“We’re unemployed together~.”

“You need to hurry to get a job again.”

Beth ended up taking Kedrick to Petit Salon. Since she didn’t know where James was, she had no choice but to find someone who did. When Beth arrived, Dana greeted her with a vacant stare. In her hand were papers Beth had not seen before.

“Be, Beth… Come in.”

“Ms. Briar, what’s wrong?”

“This… how…”

Dana handed over the documents. Beth’s eyes narrowed. It was a new contract. A new contract that omitted Claire’s name and was replaced with Count Gordon’s.

“Uh, what should I do?”

Dana looked at Beth helplessly.

Old man, you moved faster than I thought.’

She figured he would send a new contract in a few days, but he was faster than she expected.

“…Sign it. However, make adjustments to the contract. Maintain a contractual relationship with Count Gordon.”

A simple change from ‘ah’ to ‘uh’ could make a contract void.

“Also, let me meet James. I’m in a hurry.”

The notion that the true Count was still alive burned brightly in her mind, However, they needed to locate him soon. James was the only one capable to do so.

“There’s no need to search for me.”

James appeared before them in the salon and quickly pulled out something. Even though Kedrick glared at him, James shoved an envelope to Beth.

“Make sure he keeps his mouth shut. The moment he opens it, I’ll kill you both.”

“Haha, my lips are sealed tighter than it seems.”

“Shut up, Kedrick.”

Beth read the documents stuffed in the envelope. It contained a detailed account of where the former Count Gordon was.

“This…”

“I figured you wouldn’t know about this.”

James assumed Beth at some point would be expelled from the mansion. Then she would request this information. Of course, James already knew Count Gordon was alive. He decided he would research Theodore’s whereabouts and would have only revealed it upon request. Oblivious to this fact, Beth continued to read.

“As a business rule, I typically wouldn’t hand out information unless you ask.”

“Yes.”

“I’m only helping you because of the promise we made.”

“I know.”

“Hurry and finish everything, then return. You’re good at that.”

“I’m better than you think.”

James sighed then dragged them out the back door of the salon.

“Finish it in a week.”

When he said that, Beth looked at the papers.

“Impossible. It usually takes a month to travel where Count Gordon is and three weeks if we hurried.”

“That’s only if you don’t have money.”

A large shadow casted over them. Beth folded the papers then raised her head. There stood a huge black carriage hitched to eight horses.

“The carriage is imbued with land and wind magic. Still, it will take three days to arrive. I’ve yet to ride in it myself, but I’ll let it go and allow you to use it.

Beth thought, of course she only thought about it.

“… you are more capable than I thought.”

“I’m much more capable than you’ll ever know.”

Kedrick whistled and said,

“Wow, this is the same carriage the Imperial family has. They only have one.”

“How would you know?”

“Because I’ve been there.”

Kedrick replied then jumped into the carriage as if he’s done it many times before. He reached out to Beth.

“Get on.”

“…..”

Beth kept quiet. She accepted his hand and climbed into the carriage. The two of them were alone inside and rode on in silence. Beth heard the carriage rattle as it moved. They both peered out the window.

Kedrick glanced at Beth who sat across from him.

She truly was a noble and elegant woman. Yes, in ‘appearance’. Beth, who held no qualms over ruining her own body to achieve her goal, was genuinely awe-inspiring. How could someone experience such hardship day by day? Prisoners’ eyes would shine brighter than Beth’s. At least they were willing to live.

Still, he could not say anything. He also carried many secrets he hadn’t shared with Beth. If he were to inquire of her private life, then he felt he should also reveal his own.

The carriage continued onward to former Count Gordon’s hideout.
