Raise a Baby in an Apocalypse 10

How to Raise a Baby in an Apocalypse - Chapter 10 - Why is it Still Dark Outside?

Having said that, An Ran slipped her phone into her pocket, feeling uneasy. She leaned against the bed frame and slowly made her way to the door. From behind, Hu Zhen was still asking what had gone wrong, while the frail woman in bed number 18 sobbed and whimpered in her bed alone.

An Ran felt annoyed, yet she ignored both Hu Zhen and the woman in bed number 18. She then stealthily opened the door and stood in the doorway, scanning the dimly-lit corridor. The people in the corridor were moving back and forth, but their movements seemed stiffer than before. A surge of fear overcame An Ran, causing her to feel restless. She couldn’t stay in this room any longer without finding out what was actually happening out there.

“Speaking of which, have you guys noticed? It’s already 11 in the morning, but why is it still dark outside?”

A voice rang out from behind, and it was Hu Zhen who spoke. She laid on the bed with frown lines visible on her forehead as she turned to look at the sky outside the window akin to that of a rainy night sky. The streetlights that were equipped with solar panels and wind turbines were all automatically controlled by computers. At 6 in the morning, the streetlights would turn off, and at this moment looking out from the ward room, it was completely pitch black to the point where you could not see your fingers when stretched out in front of your face.

“AH!!!”

A scream pierced through the air from bed number 18 like a sharp claw that gripped tightly on An Ran’s heart. Feeling annoyed, she turned to look at the woman in bed number 18 and saw that she had now gathered her strength to sit up. The woman blew up on Hu Zhen, who was still lying on the bed, and said,

“Don’t say that! I only noticed it after you mentioned it. It’s so horrifying and scary! I need to call my husband now.”

With that, she got off the bed and retrieved her orange phone of the latest model from the cabinet drawer beside her bed and called her husband.

Weird!

An Ran had only one word to describe the woman of bed number 18. She turned her head back and continued to observe the people in the corridor through the opening of the door. These people were still walking back and forth like corpses taking a stroll along the corridor.

An Ran trembled with fear. She opened the door a bit more while holding onto her belly, wore her confinement shoes, and slowly walked out. However, she still felt uneasy, so she closed the door tightly behind her for the safety of Hu Zhen and the woman in bed number 18.

Carefully, she observed the people swaying around. They appeared more dazed than the first time she had gone out of the room. The veins on their heads were completely swollen, and as they walked, yellow phlegm continued to flow out from their mouths as well.

The lights in the hallway were flickering on and off, filling the corridor with a sense of eeriness. An Ran still had no idea of the severity of the situation. She lowered her head and silently moved forward, intending to reach the elevator to go up to the neonatal unit to find her daughter.

As she continued walking towards her destination through the corridor of flickering lights, slowly and gradually, she heard the sound of someone chewing in one of the open rooms, amidst the silence in the corridor. The sounds were loud, like a large animal gnawing on bones. An Ran suddenly froze in her tracks when the sounds came one after another.

She widened her eyes in terror, sweat dripping from her temples where her hair was stuck due to the moisture, as she slowly turned her head to look inside the unlit room. Inside the dark room, she saw a man leaning over a woman’s body, gnawing on the woman like a feral beast!

That’s right, gnawing!

The woman on the bed was still alive. She looked like she had just given birth too. Her head was wrapped in bandage, and her throat had been bitten off, causing fresh blood to trickle down. She was desperately kicking at the man on top of her, and the sounds of gnawing actually came from her body.
