How to Raise a Baby in an Apocalypse - Chapter 15 - Make Things Clear

In just a day, Zhan Lian wasn’t really able to adapt to the sudden change, let alone someone like An Ran, who was gentle and fragile. He missed a call from his ex-wife, something that has happened before. But this time, did it mean they were truly a world apart from each other?

Zhan Lian pursed his lips and furrowed his brows, looking at his phone as if he was looking at his mortal enemy. His phone had lost signal! What was he going to do now? He thought of his father during his childhood, his mother during his adolescence, and his marriage that had ended in divorce within a year of his prime. If he had to count it all, An Ran might only be one ‘former’ lover left in this world.

How can I let it go?!

“Ah Lian, what should we do now?”

A man with an accent from the South, who was much older than both Zhan Lian and Luo Feifan, and had the appearance of a 35 year old, was named Hua Lianjin. His nickname was Old Cat. He was holding a telescope, which he somehow had acquired, and stood by the kitchen window, saying to Zhan Lian,

“Not only have the people in our squad turned into monsters, I suspect the other squads are in the same predicament as well. Otherwise, why haven’t we received any response to the distress signal we’ve sent out?”

The military district was a vast area. Zhan Lian’s squad belonged to a specialized branch of the entire military district. Typically, if everyone except him and the other three had not been spared from the outbreak, then there would be some sort of action by now. However, there was only complete silence at the moment.

They were isolated, making it quite difficult to access external information. And so, should they continue waiting to be rescued, or should they consider another approach?

Zhan Lian gripped the old mobile phone in his hand, sitting down on a chair and placing his foot down on the ground from his knees. He bent over and stared at the phone screen, specifically on the word ‘Wife’, which was how he referred to An Ran. He had never gotten around to changing the name on his contacts. Each time he saw this word, it would stir up memories of the day when his ex-wife cried and told him those words over the phone.

She had a breakdown when she cried, screaming and wailing at the phone with Zhan Lian as she said,

“You were never around. When I needed you, you were never by my side. Do I look like someone with a husband? We’ve been married for a year, and within a year of marriage, I’ve only seen you for a total of three days. During those three days, all you did was to have sex with me. Besides that, there’s nothing else. When I was sick or in pain, where were you? If you just want a woman to sleep with, why did you even marry me? Spend some money and find a prostitute; that would be much easier!”

In reality, Zhan Lian had never told An Ran that he actually felt the same way; he wanted a family, and hoped to have a woman waiting for him when he came home. They would have a child and live a peaceful life. This was what he wanted as well.

But at the time, he was so angry that he just wanted to strangle An Ran. He kept his emotions bottled up and did not say anything. He wasn’t sure if there would be another chance to tell his ex-wife now.

“I need to get out!” Zhan Liam firmly gripped his phone and shoved the device with no signal into his breast pocket. He looked at his three remaining teammates and repeated with determination, “I need to get out. There are some things I need to clarify to my ex-wife. For better or for worse, I have to make things clear right to her face!”

With that, he turned around and started picking up weapons from the kitchen counter. Given the situation outside, it would be unlikely to save their other teammates. The only way out was to fight their way through and kill them all.
