How to Raise a Baby in an Apocalypse - Chapter 14 - My Ex-wife

At the entrance of the kitchen, next to the door leading to the auditorium, three men were holding pots, bowls, ladles, and basins, trying to guard the door strictly and defend themselves. Should one of them let their guard down, those “brothers” would flood in from the auditorium in no time.

Among the three men dressed in camouflage uniforms, one of them had a handsome face, who seemed to be a young soldier in his twenties. His name was Liu Xiaojue, a newcomer to this team. At this moment, Liu Xiaojue had blood stains all over his face as he wielded a kitchen knife in his hand. He walked towards Zhan Lian, lowered his head, and asked in a helpless and frustrated tone, “Brother Lian, who are you calling?”

“My ex-wife!”

He responded with three simple words and continued to dial An Ran’s phone number again, only to be greeted by a series of short busy tones.

Liu Xiaojue burst into tears. Despite being a big guy, his cries sounded like a bear’s roar. He then said in a hushed voice, “I… I called my girlfriend and my mom, but they… they didn’t answer~!

Another man who was about 30 years old, around Zhan Lian's age, looked like he could be an instructor. His name was Luo Feifan, and he wore a pair of glasses. Upon hearing their conversation, he furrowed his brow, showing signs of disagreement with Zhan Lian and Liu Xiaojue taking a break at a moment like this.

“Ah Lian, stop calling. An Ran might already…”

“Impossible!” Zhan Lian suddenly raised his head. A ruthless and fierce expression formed on his sharp facial features as he emphasized, “She called me just a moment ago. If she had become a zombie, she wouldn’t be calling me!”

In the military camp in the Northwest, a large number of soldiers had been experiencing symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and fatigue since last night. However, Zhan Lian had retired last night, and Luo Feifan had organized a farewell party for him. Despite feeling uncomfortable, everyone still came for the party.

Due to the majority feeling unwell, the farewell party was cheerful on the surface, but it lacked genuine joy. Of course, Zhan Lian was a perceptive person. Regardless of whether it was his retirement today, as long as there was a hint of an unsettling atmosphere in the air, he would be able to sense it.

However, the sudden outbreak came too suddenly. Everyone present had been his teammates with whom he had spent countless days and nights together. Their bonds were stronger than that of siblings. He never expected that after a thunderstorm, his comrades would eat other human beings.

He couldn’t even remember who the first person to turn into a cannibal was. Zhan Lian had gone out with Luo Feifan to discuss the arrangements for his post-retirement processes. He didn’t expect things to change when they returned. The outbreak happened too suddenly, but Zhan Lian and Luo Feifan were quick to react, and managed to protect themselves and a few unscathed teammates from the hellish situation of the previous night. Due to their closeness, they couldn’t bring themselves to harm their former comrades. What if there was a cure for their teammates one day?

And so they could only retreat into the kitchen, still in a state of confusion.

However, a day had passed. Normally, whenever there was a sign of trouble, the entire zone would be alerted. Yet there was no sign of people being alerted today. Zhan Lian and the others had been waiting in the kitchen for a day, but there was no sign of rescue.

Thus Zhan Lian and the others had to consider other possibilities, such as the extent of the spread of this disease. It wasn’t just their team, perhaps the disease had already radiated throughout the military district?

Or perhaps, the entire nation of China?

If the whole world had been infected, then what about An Ran? Were their families and friends safe too?
