Raise a Baby in an Apocalypse 3

How to Raise a Baby in an Apocalypse - Chapter 3 - Mistake

Did that mean the divorce was official once the papers had been received? Was there any difference in the procedure between a serviceman's divorce and that of common folk or would she need to deal with other sorts of formalities?

An Ran didn’t think much of it. At that moment, she was only thinking about how there was no love in their relationship. Her ex-husband was a soldier who would not be present at home for most of four seasons. For An Ran who had wanted a family since she was young, this marriage was a complete and utter mistake!

She was elated to have finally restored her single status!

However, not a day had passed before she could celebrate her freedom, she quickly discovered that she was pregnant, prompting her to make a call to Zhan Lian’s unit in a panic. Zhan Lian’s teammate took the call and immediately informed her that Zhan Lian had been sent abroad for a peacekeeping mission before she could mention that she was pregnant. In that instant, An Ran hastily hung up and never attempted to call Zhan Lian ever again.

Naturally, Zhan Lian did not call either. Presumably because he did not want to contact her anymore.

An Ran, who had always wanted a child but had spoken all those harsh words to her ex-husband, decided to keep the baby without much thought. She silently endured throughout the entire pregnancy and went into natural labor on full-term. An Ran managed to overcome the most painful life and death experience about natural labor, so what could Zhan Lian do for her if she were to seek him out now?

Forget it. The child was the one who came out from her. On top of that, she and Zhan Lian have been divorced for half a year. It was also uncertain whether he had already found someone he loved in his unit. It would not be Zhan Lian’s dream to have her holding a baby and reappear in his life now.

She would not dream to sabotage Zhan Lian’s happiness by showing up in front of him.

As An Ran was going through this thought, she decided to put her phone back on her bedside. After a strenuous attempt to turn over, the lochia discharge flowed out of the lower half of her body like a turbulent waterfall. She let out a sigh and looked at the hospital bag on the bed near her legs, feeling exhausted.

Beyond the curtains, the TV that was hung on the wall was now broadcasting news. The anchorman was warning the citizens to avoid leaving their houses and not to wander around the streets alone as if there were thugs out there in the open. The current situation did not seem safe at all.

An Ran yawned and tilted her head to peek at the empty cradle next to her bed. Her heart felt empty.

Whether or not the hospital was trying to rake in money, or whether the infectious virus lately was too rampant, all of the infants in the maternity ward were shown to have symptoms of cold and fever. Several mothers were also dizzy from the burning fever, which caused their own mothers and mother-in-laws to nervously ask the doctors if they were still able to breastfeed their babies.

The doctors were extremely busy and did not have the time to deal with the families of these mothers. Moreover, there were endless people crowding outside the neonatal unit. Even though they could not see the babies inside, these grandfathers, grandmothers and fathers felt content at the very least just by standing outside of the ward.

An Ran did not have such good fortune to have a bunch of family members to worry and run around for herself and her baby. Sometimes she felt envious when she looked at the other two mothers in the ward. She grew up begging for leftovers and without a handful of trustworthy relatives to rely on. An Ran became more determined to never contact them ever again especially after her divorce from Zhan Lian.

Her friends had their own lives and it would be impossible to spend a lengthy time in the hospital just to attend to her needs.

An Ran would have to figure out everything on her own.

She already had plans for herself and her child’s future a long time ago. Once she graduated from the university, she planned to work for two years and save thousands in cash, get married to Zhan Lian, have a car and a house that would be bought by Zhan Lian, and have everything solved with a couple of calls.

An Ran would be overwhelmed by all of it on her own.
