How to Raise a Baby in an Apocalypse - Chapter 18 - For Our Children

“What a joke, of course we’re going to figure out a way to wait for rescue now. Do you understand the word ‘rescue’?”

The woman of bed number 18 sat up from the bed. From the looks of her condition, despite having a natural birth, she seemed to be more energetic than An Ran was. Because of the resentment she had towards An Ran, Chen Jiao of bed number 18 wanted to challenge An Ran in terms of her words and actions, both overtly and covertly, “In this situation, there are so many monsters out there, or are they zombies? How do we get out?”

“Zombies?”

Lying in between An Ran and Chen Jiao, Hu Zhen of bed number 17 contemplated as she muttered this word. Due to her cesarean section, she had been lying in the bed, unable to move too much. And because of that, she hadn’t seen what the monsters outside looked like clearly. Chen Jiao said they were zombies, so did they look like the ones from the movies?

An Ran, filled with anger, immediately sat up from her bed. She had no idea where she found the strength at the moment, and accidentally pulled on her episiotomy wound, causing her to feel a rush of blood in her lower body. However, she couldn’t care about it for now. She yelled at Chen Jiao, “Rescue? If they were coming, they would have arrived by now. You can take your time waiting for rescue by yourself, but I’m determined to get out of here. I need to communicate what happened here to the people out there, and then get someone to save my daughter.”

An Ran then turned to Hu Zhen and said, “Considering the current situation where we can’t send messages with no phone signal, I don’t think this entire hospital looks promising. The first floor is the Outpatient Emergency Unit and the infusion room, so most people will be gathered there. The second floor is the Maternal and Child Health Department, which probably has quite a number of people too. The third floor is the Maternity Check-up Unit, fourth floor is the Maternity Unit, fifth floor is the Neonatal Unit, sixth floor is the Pediatric Department, and the seventh floor is the Gynecology Department. When I climbed to the fifth floor to check a moment ago, there were more people than that in the Maternity Unit.”

“Do you still intend to go to the Neonatal Unit right now?”

Chen Jiao looked at An Ran with a rather sharp gaze and couldn’t help but think that this woman was truly a weirdo. Despite the current circumstances, she still had the gall to wander outside. She had even walked through a crowd of zombies shortly after giving birth, and had gone to the Neonatal Unit as well.

“Our children are still in the Neonatal Unit.”

Hu Zhen of bed number 17 responded to Chen Jiao on behalf of An Ran. She felt that it was quite understandable for An Ran, as a mother, to climb up to the Neonatal Unit to check on the situation at a time like this. It was actually Chen Jiao’s reaction that was hard to understand. After all, these children were their own flesh and blood. The situation was unusual, and as a mother, how could she not want to see her own child even for a moment?

Chen Jiao sneered and said, “Anyway, I'm not in the mood to care about my son right now. My mother-in-law forced me to have him, and it was excruciatingly painful for me. She said that I just needed to give birth and she would take care of him. But now? I don’t even know where the hell my mother-in-law is.”

“With that attitude of yours, even if I were your mother-in-law and the zombies came, I’d definitely leave you behind and run!”

An Ran lying back down on the bed, retorted and turned to her side, facing away from Chen Jiao. She didn’t want to give this spoiled woman even a shred of face. As the saying goes, “Different paths lead to different objectives”. Although she and Chen Jiao were both mothers, their attitudes toward their children were entirely different. There was nothing more to say.

“Alright, alright. Stop arguing and stop the infighting.” Hu Zhen, who was lying in the middle, finally stepped in and mediated. “The situation outside is complex now, and it looks like we’re the only three people left in this entire maternity ward. The three of us need to unite, not just for ourselves, but also for our children.”
